The Latin American Report # 607

A magistrate from the Sectional Judicial Council of the Colombian department of Cundinamarca died during a shootout between his bodyguards and some criminals who entered to rob a restaurant located on the highway. Initial reports do not indicate that the magistrate was specifically targeted, but rather that he was the victim of a fortuitous event that nonetheless sends worrying signals about the major problem with violence in the South American country.

For example, these days have seen a peak of violence in the prison system, with several victims among the prison guards, while last Thursday a unit of guerrillas from the defunct FARC-EP freed eight members of a medical mission they had been holding in the department of Huila.

Peru

In always tumultuous Peru, the recent parliamentary dismissal of now former president Dina Boluarte has not calmed the spirits of various actors in civil society, who are demanding the closure of Congress itself. Amon them, you see the relatives of the nearly 50 dead resulting from the protests that erupted in the country when Boluarte came to power in December 2022, following a reckless political maneuver by the prosecuted former president Pedro Castillo. Boluarte is singled out as responsible for those deaths by the protesting relatives, who demand she go to prison. She says she will not seek asylum and is not guilty of any crime.

"We do not feel represented because these gentlemen [in Congress] are the ones who have shielded Dina Boluarte so she doesn't have to answer to justice," said an activist. The country's largest business association urged an orderly transition. "Peru needs security, stability, dialogue, and respect for institutions. Only with serenity and responsibility will we be able to overcome this new political crisis and put the country back on the path of growth, employment, and especially confront the grave situation of insecurity the country is experiencing," the group stated in a communiqué.

Next Wednesday, the Judicial Power will evaluate a request from the Public Ministry to prohibit the unpopular former president from leaving the country while several pending cases against her for corruption and human rights violations are resolved. For the moment, the United States wishes to foster some institutional stability by supporting the figure of the interim president. The issue of large-scale corruption in Peru, even in the very House of Pizarro, is a chronic problem.

Venezuela

Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this Friday, a nonsensical decision from every angle one looks at it. To be fair, Trump was a better pick.

🚨 BREAKING: President Trump was CALLED by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado and she said - "I'm accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it."

"I didn't say, 'Then, give it to me!' though." 😂

"I think she might've. She was very nice."
