There is a documentary film released in 2016, about Ukraine. It's "Ukraine on Fire", and Oliver Stone was its executive producer.

According to this documentary, there are really neo-nazi radical groups in Ukraine. They follow anti-semetic/far-right ideologies of Stepan Bandera.
It looks like coup was engineered by those radical groups in 2014, with support of the U.S., to overthrow pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych.
You can also get a glimpse of why Putin decided to invade Ukraine from this documentary. Here is what Putin says about NATO in this film:
Why do we react so vehemently to NATO's expansion? We are concerned with the decision-making process. I know how decisions are made. As soon as the country becomes a member of NATO, it can't resist the pressure of the USA. And very soon anything at all can appear in such country - missile defense systems, new bases, or, if necessary, new missile strike systems.
This film might be inconvenient to some people because it shows that Russia-Ukraine conflict is not that simple like "Putin is a psychopath and Zelensky is a hero". But I think it's an important documentary with many significant contexts and details.
