Yes, I believe it is a good idea. While your points are valid, I think there is a greater than necessary fear of violent clashes. And to be fair, many are simply recommending defunding the police so as to reallocate their budget to programs which would perform the very services that we have been overburdening the police with for years. It just doesn't make sense for an officer with a gun to be in charge of many situations with the homeless or schoolchildren. By defunding a police department, we could dissolve their positions and thereby circumvent the ridiculous power of their unions. Then, after putting a bunch of the money in better suited programs, the police department could be reinstated on a smaller scale.
