Thankfully a hardfork doesn't delete anything, but duplicates it. All content from Steemit (from before the fork) is still there and also exists here on HIVE. Now if the entire internet goes down, that's another (bigger) story.
You're right, at least in part. The chain we're on, however, is the result of censoring unacceptable data and events, as well as much else that has been lamentably lost. A Carrington event is even out of our control, and makes our attempts at data security fallible.
