Hi Hivers!

Since prehistoric times, man has needed a place to shelter, to protect his family from external agents such as weather and predators. But with the evolution, man has modified his lifestyle and even the way he builds his shelters, all thanks to the change of consciousness focused on harmonizing nature with man's daily life.

In the following post, you will learn a little about how a house can perfectly commune with the environment using cutting-edge technology without harming ecosystems and decreasing its carbon footprint.

Identifying an ecological house.

An ecological house is one that is built mostly with natural or recycled non-toxic materials, its design is made respecting the green areas of the place. They are self-sufficient houses, that is to say: they satisfy their own demand for energy and other supplies derived from them.

On the basis of design and construction materials.

At the moment of designing and building an ecological house, all the elements that will integrate the house must be taken into consideration, from the materials to the ornamentation.

For the location, the meteorological conditions of the place are taken into consideration, since the winds, solar radiation and other climatic variants are key to carry out the respective analysis for the design and installation of the electrical energy, heating and cooling systems.

The preferred materials for construction range from wood as they are excellent insulators and come from forests that are sustainably treated to ecological concrete which uses a smaller volume of raw material during its manufacture, is able to increase energy efficiency and is a highly resistant element.

Main characteristics:

  • Its location and geographic orientation is in accordance to optimally take advantage of the sun's heat and light energy, which will favor the internal thermal acclimatization of the house and in turn allows a minimum energy expenditure.

  • They use renewable systems (such as solar and wind) for self-supply of electricity.

  • They use collection and purification systems to supply water to some areas of the houses, such as: toilets, gardens, swimming pools, aquariums, etc.

  • Likewise, they take advantage of subway heat to develop radial heating and cooling systems inside the house.

  • They have low energy consumption appliances.

  • They take advantage of cross air currents to ventilate and cool the home.

How to make our home and place environmentally friendly:

You may be wondering: how can I turn my current home into an eco-friendly place, without having to rebuild it?

Obviously we cannot tear down the walls and foundations to build a house that will be in harmony with the environment, however we can make small changes in our lifestyle that will allow us to make our home a more environmentally friendly place.

  1. When decorating the house, avoid using materials and paints that contain toxic substances. Check labels and verify that these products comply with international production standards.

  2. In summer and spring, try to keep open the windows because the fresh air can circulate inside the house. In this way, besides keeping the house well ventilated, you will be saving electric energy due to the use of air conditioners, and additionally you will be reducing the production of viruses and bacteria that originate thanks to the constant use of conventional cooling systems.

  3. Buy A+++ certified products, as this guarantees that the appliances are energy efficient.

  4. Do not waste water.

  5. Buy LED luminaires, they generate less heat, have greater durability, and consume less energy which translates into lower electric service billing costs.

  6. Try to maximize the energy consumption of your products, always trying to keep them at the operating levels recommended by the manufacturer.

  7. Learn to reuse resources, such as plastic bags, rainwater, etc.

A green house is a lifestyle. It will always depend on us what changes we want to make to be more generous with the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.
