RE: Using Poo to Save the World | Part 2 - Nature, the Grandmaster of Transformation (feat. The Humanure Handbook)

in ecoTrain2 months ago

I love this info and so glad this post appeared in the ecotrain community. It is such a trip to think that most people in the west are pooing into drinkable water!! Right now my partner and I are on a journey to build a composting toilet with a two bin system. I dont really like the idea of pooing into a bucket and then having to handle that fresh material on a weekly basis. I feel that the bucket system is the main reason most people arent willing to try composting humanmanure. But, in some situations that really is the best way to go. Personally composting insitu feels right to me but, it does require a sound infastructure first. It is good to know all about the processes of breaking down the harmful aspects of humanmanure, we will defintately consider all of this. Thanks for sharing!

thanks for the comment!
there are systems out there that let you "deposit" directly onto the compost bin, jenkins even mentions this in his q&a section of the book. it can be done, thereby completely eliminating the bucket part.

my woman and i have our own reasons why we would like to avoid buckets as well. our 10 month experience with it was simply too much to handle because of the distance to the compost pile from the bathroom.

as long as you make sure everything is covered, you can toilet right into the pile. a movable toilet cabin of sorts comes to mind so you could simply move it over a few feet to the other compost bin once the first one is full. you would also have a roof over the pile quite automatically.

using no buckets is however less inconspicuous. ahahhaa. if you have prying neighbors they may quickly figure it out. then again since all your kitchen scraps also go on the compost this way it is not as noticeable as one might think.

if you like the idea you guys should really read the book.

it's also been archived online if you know where to look ;)

since we will build our own system hopefully this year and have the same idea of keeping the bucket involvement to a minimum let's just compare notes. for the moment i can at least offer some information as i have the book right here.

blessings to you and thanks again for sharing your thoughts
