Excavating, Screen Replacement, Creek, Burgers, Bee - Monday

Yesterday was a nice day in general. The weather was perfect, the sun was out, and I got a few things accomplished around the farm. First as I was trying to walk through the gate I had to pry my way through the chokecherry branches that drooped way down. I got a couple pieces of rope and tied the branches up to the trunk to raise them out of the walking path. I trimmed a bunch of the bushes back as well to open the path more.

The boys have a fairly good sized hole dug down by the little creek. It has been getting slowly bigger and deeper. They have a couple pretty larger rocks exposed and are working the hole into a bit of a cave. The ground is solid enough I am not really worried about it collapsing. R spends a good amount of time prying rocks and shoveling dirt.

The flowers are blowing up all around the farm. I have to wait for them to cycle so I can weed eat the areas since there is noxious weeds mixed with the flowering plants.

I finally took the time to re-screen our screen doors for the slider. They had the plastic screen in them and the dog and boys had put holes in them. I have had the screen for a while but hadn't taken the time to do the switch. It was pretty quick and easy once I got into it. First I pulled the bead lock from the groove and set it aside to reuse. Then I pulled the old screen out and laid the metal screen over the frame.

I pushed the screen into the groove with the tool and got all 4 sides set. I had to go somewhat slow with the tool so as not to break the wires. I heard a number of little snaps of wire but it was minimal.

The bead lock got set back into the groove and pressed into place. I worked around all four sides and once the bead lock was all in I took my utility knife and cut the screen flush with the top of the groove.

I cleaned up all the little wire pieces left and then repeated the process on the second screen. They look so much better now and the screen is much stronger. Hopefully the dog won't destroy this stuff with his nails.

Mid afternoon we went down to the big creek. The water is still pretty damn cold but the dog didn't care, he was right in it splash-bite-barking his fool head off.

The boys did laps up and down the tunnel then rummaged around the rocks in the creek.

Not sure what kind of eggs they are but J found them when he turned a rock over. I figure they are amphibian eggs since they were stuck to the rock. Fish don't stick their eggs to the rock like that.

I got a fire going in the pit so I could grill burgers over it.

Before our trip we picked up a couple pounds of beefalo so I mixed the meat up with garlic and onion powder, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and raw millet. The patties came out beautiful and held their shape exactly.

As we sat on the deck eating this monster bumble bee landed on the chive flowers, bending the stalk from its weight. Incredible how big of a body with such tiny little wings.

Today I have to find out about grain pickups, start weed eating the farm, and check the squash garden.

Doing screen repair is really hard for me, as you said one wants to keep those little pops to a minimum...

Those burgers look wonderful...
