Question of the week season 10.4 – “Is The World Overpopulated And What Can We Do To Solve The Issue?”

Interesting question to write about. A few days ago, this question was asked from @neoxiancity chat located in the element.
Overpopulation is one of the major problems the world is facing right now, especially underdeveloped countries such as some of the countries in Africa.
I showed a group of children to my friends in the chat section, whose parents left them at the age of 5 or 6 years and never went home again.
There are religions and ethnics that allow a man to have more than 2 wives, and they can give birth to as many children as they want without considering the future of the children, the welfare, the care and many more.
Despite the overpopulation in my country, there is a belief that, whether you take care of your children or not, any of them that want to succeed will succeed without their parents' help. This belief made some people give birth to many children consciously.
In the 18th century, the major source of income for survival was farming. 95% of the population were farmers, and the farmers needed labourers. Hence, farmers tend to give birth to more children so that they would not lack manpower in those days. They married many wives, and had many children for the purpose of farming: there was no technology for farming except hoe, cutlass, and using cattle for plowing.
In my ethics, you can marry as many wives as you want even though you cannot take care of them: the same also goes for the children, you can have as many children as you want and no one will question you for having them.
There are many children who have fathers and mothers but they don’t care about them. I have one scenario in my school because I teach in a government college. Most of those children don’t eat breakfast and their parents don’t even care what they eat. Their parents don’t even know how these children are doing in school, they are less concerned about their education.

What Can We Do To Solve The Issue Of Overpopulation?

  • Legislation of 2 or 3 children: the best way to solve this issue is the strict law to minimize the number of children to be born. China did that and succeeded in it. A Chinese is only allowed to have 2 children, breaking this law will result in punishment. If the world can take this law into action, I think things will change. I believe that if you cannot take care of a child, you don’t need to give birth to a child. I have this idea that giving birth to one or two will allow you to be more focused, care and provide whatever they want without stress.
If countries succeed in the legislation of 2 or 3 children, even though a man has more than one wife, Overpopulation will be controlled.
  • More advocate: thanks to World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). They are trying in local communities; they made many things available that could help to control childbearing.
It is left for the government to advocate about how to control childbearing, sensitizing and publicizing through many mediums. There are many uneducated citizens who do not know how they can control it and what are the disadvantages of having too many children.
Since the majority of the citizens undergo a basic educational system, the government should try to embed how to control childbearing into the basic school curriculum. By doing this, the majority would understand how to avoid such cases.
I met with two women last week, they were asking me questions about childbearing. One of them said, “Is it good to have many children?” I said, well!! For me I don’t, because what is the importance of giving birth to children and yet you cannot give them a good life, quality education, care and many more.

  • Family planning program: family planning will have a long way to go in this matter.
I asked some of my students that got pregnant that, “is there no way of avoiding the pregnancy?” I understand that these children do not want to have a baby at an early stage but lack the ability to avoid it. The parents also forbid the use of contraceptives and some of them don’t even know it.
Hence, if Government incorporated sex education into many subjects to make sure these children understand the topics in basic level. Some of them will probably want to do whatever they have taught them in the future. I believe children often obey more than adults, and stick to whatever they have learned. But the problem is the superstition behind contraceptives which made many of them not like it at all.
Children are exposed to the internet and technology at an early age, because some of them are using Android, iPhone etc.
In my own perception, if both parents and children are enlightened about family planning, it will help a lot. Teaching children above the age of 11 years and married women contraceptives, it will help to curb the problem of overpopulation.
  • Education is very important: education is a key to successful countries. I acquired this knowledge through education: education makes someone know what he/she will do, is like light unto our path.

  • Advice newly married couples: let them understand the problem the world is facing due to overpopulation. Advise them about how many children they can have, give them clear examples of the reason they must not have too many children.

You have said well @hive-world and I agree with all you have said. The truth is many farmers are uneducated and lack good mentality on how to solve overpopulation especially in the issue of childbearing. They believe more children will help them on the farm whereas they can't take care of them by giving them quality education they need.

I believe with government giving strict laws on the numbers of children to be given birth to will reduce the issue and awareness plus education will aid the effectiveness of reducing child rate. Thanks for sharing your thought.

I really find your thoughts and suggestions to this topic really educative and interesting to learn from. I believe the aspect of reducing the number of children is a good one so as the aspect of taking care of them would be possible rather than give birth to children to allow them suffer which I believe is not appropriate at all.

Yeah, looking at the world right now, everything seems to be very high. Most of the things that are easily accessible with just little tokens has become difficult.
This simply means that, the more you have children, the more you spend on the food, school, clothes, and many more.
This can result to frustration if the man is not have enough.
Having 2 children is somehow good and ok.
