I think that romantic love was actually quite rare and a thing of fantasy in the past.
Yes, it was easier before, but it totally wasn't. My parents were testament. They were brought together by family and sincerely, the love never grew or materialized to something tangible. While I know a lot of people back then we're lucky to experience real romantic love. I think, it's different now, one of the reasons is due to materialistic tendencies and trying to create feeling by tying it to conditional things.
