I'm not sure if it's any better or worse than when it was perfectly normal to settle slights to pride with duels to the death or when glory and honour was based around how many enemies you slaughtered on a battlefield but in meatspace with actual death or just different.
We've moved from actually doing it, to pretending to do it, so maybe that's the difference? Now I'm wondering how common serial killers were when it was perfectly acceptable to kill each other. Have we created this phenomenon by ruling it not acceptable? 🤔
