@ecoTrain QOTW 10.6 - What should we be eating to be healthy and vibrant?

What I have noticed that different age groups have different approach towards food. For someone like me in 40s my parents and grandparents preferred to eat only home cooked food and they are obsessed with it. My mother who is 80, she does not like to go to a restaurant and eat. The Younger generation prefers to eat more of junk food which is less on nutrition and high on taste. For my age group we are somewhere in the middle, we enjoy both sides of it.

We can see the difference in the health of our old family members and the new generation. Obesity is a very big issue in the younger generation. In the last 20 to 30 years the Cancer and Heart Attack cases are at steep rise and our nutrition is to be largely blamed for it. Our body is like a bank we keep depositing food in it and it keeps getting accumulated and then it gives back returns with interest whatever we have accumulated in it. So the more junk we give to our body, in return we will get similar results with poor health and ailments of all sorts.

Junk food are filled with high level of Carbs, Sugar, Seed Oils all that which is not healthy for the body, the only thing it gives is very good taste, which becomes addiction and we turn to it more and more.
We need all types of minerals for our body and hence when we plan our diet it is important to plan it in a way where in all the vitamins and minerals have good amount of consumption, like zinc builds ups our immunity, Magnesium helps deal with stress, Potassium controls blood sugar, Iron gives good oxygenation...and so on. It is not possible to get all of it from one particular food and hence planning a holistic diet is very important.

Personally these are my ways that I follow to keep a healthy diet regime

  • No processed food ( all the packed ready to cook food, like nuggets, burgers)
  • No Junk food - MacD Subway, KFC, Pizzas - Occasionally I indulge in a burger or a pizza, and this occasion is once or twice a year max.
  • Less Consumption of Sweets
  • No Seed oils. I only use Ghee in my day to day cooking.
  • Two fruits a day
  • Home cook food as much as possible which comprises of Veggies, meat, chicken, fish, whole grains, Nuts.
  • Avoid Gluten as much as possible
  • Unsaturated fat over saturated fat
Weekends are the time when we indulge in eating out, but no junk food.

There is a lot of hype about cutting down carbs from the diet but our body does need Carbs to produce energy for the body to function. Carbs should not come from unhealthy sources. There are whole grains, vegetables and fruits that provide carbs and those should be consumed for healthy carbs

In general a healthy diet should comprise of a good mix of fruits, specially seasonal fruits, vegetables and meat also. Many people do not believe in eating meat, but meat is an important source for nutrition like liver is the food with maximum nutrition gives vitamin A, B, Folate, Iron, Copper.

Avoiding fried foods over steamed, grilled and baked food is a healthier option.
Being healthy and vibrant is just not about eating healthy foods. There are many other lifestyle modifications that one needs to make because many utilities also carry toxins which accumulates in the body and leads to some serious diseases, like, alcohol, smoking, fluoride in our toothpaste, aluminum in our deodorant, fragrance perfumes, benzene in the sunscreen, chlorine in water, PFOAs in non-stick cookware. All of these are dangerous for our health.

Getting a good sleep, eating a healthy diet, taking enough sunlight, doing exercises, yoga meditation all of this together makes a healthy and vibrant us.

You have exactly my kind of taste. I don't really like eating outside. I prefer food I cooked at home. But sometimes I feel so lazy to cook because am living alone. And buying food outside really costs a lot of money. The most healthy food is the one you cook yourself because you know what you're eating.

Yes, sometimes we feel lazy to cook but then in such times I make a fry egg or boiled egg or some quick salad to fill up. Eating out is always a desire and controlling that desire is truly a tough job.

This is all that there is to having healthy food and you did so well explaining everything in detail. Well done dear, I enjoyed my read.
