I used to catch these guys with thick leather gloves when I was a kid. They have a strong bite but after you've held them for a while they stop trying to bite.

Hehehe, they never bit me, but then again, I never gave them the chance. What hurt more, though, and for that some thick leather gloves would have come in real handy, was cleaning up their nests. Not of soft and fluffy material... full of cactus stickers! After a couple of painful experiences, I only touched that stuff with shovels, pans, and other implements.
I would search their nests for coins, they are a bit of glitter bugs, mostly bottle caps but I found a quarter and nickel once.
