Farming is one thing that really feed the world, but the way it is done in different country is not the same at all. I have read and watch video about farming in Korea and when I compare it to what is happening here in Nigeria, I just shake my head.
In Nigeria, most of our farmers still use cutlass and hoe. Some even farm with bare hand and small energy. I remember when I follow my uncle to his farm in Ondo, we wake up as early as 5am to clear land with hoe. Before 10am, we already sweating like person inside rain. It is not easy at all, yet after all the stress, when harvest come, the gain no dey much. Government no dey help too. Many times farm road is bad, fertilizer is costly, and no support for local farmers. So most people don’t even want to farm again, they prefer to go city.
But when you look at Korea, it is like another world. Their farming system is modern and well planned. They use machine for almost everything planting, watering, harvesting, even packaging. The farmers there no need to bend back from morning to night like we do here. I see one Korean video where just two person manage big rice farm with machine. Here in Nigeria, that kind of farm will need at least 20 people.
Another thing I notice is that Korean government value their farmers. They give them support, good loan, training and new equipment. Farming there is like business, not suffering. In Nigeria, it still look like punishment.
If we can get such support and technology here, farming will change life of many people. We have good land, rain, sun, everything is here. Only thing missing is right plan and support.
I believe one day our leaders will wake up and see that agriculture is not for poor people, it is for wise people who feed the world. When that happen, Nigeria farming will rise again
