[Opinion] Future of reading_EN/KR

There are several predictions that reading abilities will create a new class of society in the near future; a society where classes are distinguished not by power, or money, but by reading habits.

Education expert Kazuhi Fujihara has argued that 'the key ability of the future is an ability to select and edit information in a flood of information. Without reading skills, one will become obsolete.'

You will become obsolete in society, if you don't read.

While this may sound extreme, society has already changed dramatically with the internet and various methods of info dissemination. From reading books to blog postings, to video clips, to shorts, the transition to methods of acquiring information that stimulate dopamine has relegated the 'reading a book' to a tedious and stale method.

However, paradoxically, the ability to read is expected to become even more necessary in a future society filled with fake news and junk information. Understanding the context and intention of a text and acquiring the essence of wisdom - this method remains an unchanging value.

Human intellectual capacity is at the point of evolution.

In the past, 'how much you know' and 'how well you know it' were important measures of intellectual ability. Now, with the development of the tech and various AI services, it is becoming more important to use these resources well (know-where) to discern and edit the acquired information effectively.

In particular, the ability to select and identify right information will be a crucial in an era rampant with fake news and malicious information. In the future, the advance of AI tech will demand more of this, and failure to keep up the trend and changes could mean falling behind in society.

The development of literacy, vocabulary, and thinking skills through reading books, similar to how the bourgeois class with capital rose during the Industrial Revolution, leads me to imagine that in the near future, the 'class of people reading books' will emerge as another social class in society.

It is interesting to contemplate how things are going to evolve now with the advent of AI. At least now in its current iteration. I think it is hard to even imagine where we go from here. This technology is so incredibly disruptive!

the ability to select and identify right information will be a crucial in an era rampant with fake news and malicious information.

It is pretty hard to identify the Authenticity of any news ... books does help in improving languages and vocabs...but it is limited to fiction too...too much dependency may make a person far away from reality

Yes, so true. But I also believe that reference & fact checking with critical reading will enhance the way.
