Resilience is a term that has been thrown around a lot in recent months, but few understand the strength and fortitude required to overcome uncomfortable situations or the ability to adapt. The residents of this community had adapted to walking long distances to fetch a few liters of water.
La resiliencia es un término que en los últimos meses se ha empleado mucho, pero pocos conocen la fortaleza y enterereza que se debe tener para salir de situaciones incómodas o la capacidad de adaptación. Los habitantes de esta comunidad se habían adaptado a caminar grandes distancias para buscar unos pocos litros de agua.
During these times, the situation was worse. Climbing slopes and hills in these high temperatures caused residents to faint, especially the elderly, who struggled to carry a few liters of water. The young and small members of the household would go with their jerry cans to collect water for bathing or cooking dinner. Many grandmothers sent their grandchildren to fetch water. This had become a custom.
En estas fechas era peor la situación. Tener su subir cuestas y colinas con estas altas temperaturas, provocaba en los habitantes desmayos, sobre todo en los adultos mayores que se esforzaban por traer unos pocos litros. Los jóvenes y pequeños de la casa iban con sus pimpinas a recoger el agua para bañarse o para elaborar la cena. Muchas abuelas mandaban a sus nietos a que le trajeran agua. Esto se había vuelto una costumbre.
However, an idea emerged. Since October 2024, we have been building a canal to address the situation in this town. It's a milestone in this community, and we've worked hard to ensure it continues because it's a unique event that has changed the lives of the residents, not only in this town but also in the surrounding villages.
Sin embargo, una idea surgió. Desde octubre del 2024 estamos construyendo un canal que permita solventar la situación de esta localidad. Es un hito en esta comunidad y nos hemos esmerado en que se siga, porque es un acontecimiento único que ha cambiado a los habitantes, no solo de este poblado, sino de los pueblos aledaños.
At a time when Venezuela is facing one of its greatest challenges due to intense temperatures, according to INAMEH (National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología), these temperatures could reach over 39 degrees Celsius. This idea of a well or water channel has begun to bear fruit. With a temporary tap, it is not only supplying water to the town but is also supplying large tanks from other locations to deliver it to these underserved communities.
En estos momentos cuando Venezuela afronta uno de sus mayores desafíos por la intensas temperaturas, de acuerdo al INAMEH (Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología), estos niveles alcanzarían más 39 de grados Celsius. Esta idea del pozo o canal de agua ha empezado a dar sus frutos, con una llave provisional, no solo está suministrando agua al poblado sino que llega de otras localidades a surtir grandes tanques para llevarla a esas poblaciones desasistidas.
It's important to emphasize that this idea of a well or water channel is innovative, as it currently eliminates the need for pumps or other mechanisms; instead, the water supply is provided by free fall and elevation. This process is pertinent because: first, in the places where the springs are located, they do not have access to electrical means; and second, due to high temperatures, the State has declared an electrical emergency and announced power outages. In rural areas, these outages are lasting more than six to ten hours.
Es necesario resaltar que esta idea del pozo o canal de agua es innovadora, por cuanto no es necesario, hasta los momentos, de emplear bombas u otro mecanismo, sino que el suministro es por caída libre y elevación. Es pertinente este proceso por cuanto: primero, en los lugares en los que se encuentran los manantiales no tienen acceso a medios eléctricos; y, en segundo lugar, debido a las altas temperaturas el Estado ha decretado una emergencia eléctrica y ha comunicado cortes de electricidad, en las poblaciones rurales, estos cortes alcanzan más de 6 o 10 horas.
Therefore, this first well or canal is currently a lifeline not only for this community, but also for others who feel confident in going and collecting this vital liquid in their buckets, jugs, or tanks.
Por ello, este primer pozo o canal, es actualmente, una salvación para no solo esta comunidad, sino las otras que se sienten confiados de ir y recoger en sus tobos, pimpinas o tanques el vital líquido.
The community is grateful; children, women, and the elderly now have more direct access to water, which reduces health risks. WATER PROJECT (now HIVE LATAM WATER PROJECT) appreciates it even more. It is these moments when “crazy ideas” take on a truly transformative force with meaning.
La comunidad lo agradece, niños, mujeres y ancianos ahora tienen acceso más directo al agua, lo cual reduce los riesgos para la salud. WATER PROJECT (ahora HIVE LATAM WATER PROJECT) lo agradece aún más. Son estos momentos cuando las “ideas locas” cobran una verdadera fuerza transformadora con significado.
