The Secret of the selfhood mystery

in Ladies of Hive5 months ago (edited)

I have written a couple of times about the aversive effects of noise pollution on my mood and mental well-being. Music is not excluded from the list of voices that cause disturbance in my well-being. Certain music and songs are so distressing that they induce nausea and elevate my heart rate within ten minutes.

The repeated exposure to most of the songs makes my sleep troublesome. and also obscure the focus. Due to such an impact of music on me it is easy to conclude that I am not into Music too much.

Nevertheless, it does not mean that I don’t admire any kind of music. There are certain songs and melodies that have pleasurable effect on my auditory senses.

After reading the article, provided by @samsmith1971 in the announcement post for #dreemwotw I figured out that I am among the category of the people who prefer the music with high depth and low valance. This is perhaps the reason classical music with meaningful poetry have a soothing effect on while the pop music doesn’t attract me.

One of my most favorite song is “Khudi ka sirre Nihan" sung by Sanam Marvi and Shafqat Amanat Ali. Here is the link to the YouTube video.

The lyrics of the song are from a famous ghazal by Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Interestingly, the poem is sung by another singer in pop style but that one didn’t appeal me at all. The clarity of words and the pauses are not apt to convey the meaning of the poetry. On the other hand, the one sung by the afore mentioned singers is the best expression for the words. The pauses are just perfect and the melody is fantabulous.

As I mentioned the lyrics are from a Ghazal. Let me explain what it is. Ghazal is a form of poetry with rhyming couplets (called as Shair and a repeating refrain. The genre originated from Arabic language and then was adopted by several South Asian, Persian and Turkish languages.

Each Shair of a ghazal is self-contained and often unrelated to the preceding or following couplets. Their theme do not need to be similar either; the couplets may or may not be abstractly related. Except the restriction of rhyming and repeating refrain, Ghazal provides a whole lot of independence of subject matter within a single poem. The structure of this genre makes it pleasurable to auditory senses while the independence of the subject matter gives it the capacity to be intellectually rich.

However, some of the ghazals are composed in a fashion where all the couplets deliver a central theme but in diversified facets. Dr. Iqbal was one of those poets who gave thematic flow to Ghazal; and personally I believe, the thematic flow make this genre more pleasurable to Intellect.

In the ghazal Khudi ka sirre Nihaan there is one central theme which is explained and elaborated by a variety of descriptions. Before proceeding to the explanation of the theme, I must confess that I might not do the justice to the philosophical depth presented in the poem. These are not merely the verses that are supposed to be explained, but several words in each couplet need to be explained separately in order to grab the meaning.

A couple of couplets refer to historic events. To understand their message a knowledge of those events is required. Moreover, the more I contemplate on the meaning of each Sher, the more I find it to be vast in the interpretation.

With the confession of my limitations, let me begin with the explanation. As I already mentioned that the Ghazal is revolving around one theme, and that is the strength and importance of “LA ILAHA ILLALLAH". It is an Arabic sentence that may be translated to There is no god but Allah. (Lately, I have found out that the word “Allah" is not unique to Muslims but Arabic translation of Holy Bible also uses the same word for God Almighty. The word was equally used by Arabic speaking Christians, Jews and Muslims)

However, translation is never enough to understand the original words of any language especially a rich language like Arabic. Moreover, sometimes the words themselves are merely the tip of an iceberg. An in-depth contemplation is needed to understand the wisdom and message. So let me explain a bit of the theme the sentence holds in it.

First of all, the sentence is an expression of the belief in oneness of God. It is an acceptance of the fact that God Almighty is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient; no one shares in His power. He is the ultimate authority before whom everything surrenders.

Going deeper into the meaning gives the realization that it is only God whose will can make things happen. No matter how powerful the worldly people/things may appear, they hold no power in front of God.

The belief makes it easier to choose and walk on the right path despite the opposition and/or rivalries. The belief helps coming out of the fears and face challenges with courage. In essence , this profound belief serves as a guiding light, emphasizing divine sovereignty and fostering an unwavering trust.

The ghazal opens with the word “KHUDI". It is a term coined by Dr. Iqbal himself. A great portion of his poetry revolves around the subject. The word can be translated as “Selfhood".

In Iqbal’s philosophy KHUDI is an emphasis on the development and realization of one’s own self, inner potential, and individuality. It encourages individuals to cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness and self-respect, fostering personal growth and a deeper understanding of one’s purpose in life.

The first couplet of the ghazal says,

Khudi ka sirre Nihaan Lailaha IllAllah
Khudi he Taigh, fasaan Lailaha IllAllah

Translation

The secret of the selfhood mystery is La Ilaha IllAllah.
The selfhood is a sword, the grinding stone is La Ilaha IllAllah.

The verses have a deep spiritual message. It tells that the method to achieve an empowered self is the true belief in Oneness of God and thus on His unparalleled power and authority.

While the awareness of one’s inner potential and strength is like a sword, the stone that gives it sharpness and make it worthwhile for its purpose is the belief in Oneness of God. The belief instills a resilience that empowers an individual to navigate life's complexities with fortitude, transcending fear and meeting challenges head-on.

These verses resonate deeply, offering empowerment amidst life's uncertainties.
I find these verses truly empowering in the face of uncertain circumstances. Often our self-awareness is eclipsed by fear of known and unknown challenges. A staunch belief on the powerlessness of everyone and everything else in front of God’s power gives us the strength needed to face and overcome these challenges with resilience.

The following verses also discuss the same ideology in various dimensions. (I think there is need of separate post for the explanation of each couplet. So I am merely providing a summarized perspective).

There is a demonstration of how we are deceived by perception of loss and gain, love, relationships and wealth. These things make us lose our purpose. A steadfast belief on the Oneness of God is the remedy to all these deceptions.

In conclusion the song “Khudi ka sirre Nihaan” (The secret of the selfhood mystery) stands as my most favorite song due to its profound impact on both my auditory senses and intellectual appreciation.

The fusion of Sanam Marvi and Shafqat Amanat Ali's voices in interpreting Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s Ghazal creates a captivating melody that resonates deeply. The clarity of expression, perfectly times paused, and the fantabulous musical composition enhance the lyrical beauty, making it a truly immersive experience.

Besides the aesthetic appeal, the central theme of the poem, emphasizing the strength derived from a belief in Oneness of God, adds a layer of spiritual significance that speaks to the core of my values.

This song, with its soothing effect and rich thematic depth holds a unique place in my musical preferences making it a cherished favorite.

Thanks a lot

@amberkashif,
You are most welcome.
I'll keep up the good work.

It's so true that some music might be disturbing to one's auditory senses while we find some pleasing to our ears.

Such music has an in-depth meaning and we found how it truly resonates with everything we believe in, religion, and so forth.

Sometimes I feel such music calls to our innermost being that can connect with the universe and then we source strength from it.

Not all would relate to this post but it would connect with those that it resonates with. Thanks for sharing Amber💙...I love this!

Hmmm 🤔
Arabic words with deep meanings that I'm unfamiliar with. The unlimited power of God strengthens us to face lifes' daily challenges so, believing and trusting God is the best option both in good and bad times.

#Dreemerforlife.

believing and trusting God is the best option both in good and bad times.

That's the belief that makes us redilient, isn't it?

Of course it is!

Lover of Arabic will fall in love with this, I love poetry but I do not understand Arabic.
#dreemerforlife

The poem has only sentence (the repeating one) that's in Arabic, the rest is Urdu.
!LOLZ and I am sure you don't understand Urdu either. Hehe. No worries
