I’ve been using Abyssal Elemental a lot lately and it became one of those cards that just keeps surprising me every time. At first, I thought it was just another 6 mana magic attacker with some armor. But after more battles, I realized how flexible and scary it can be if used right. It has a good mix of armor, magic attack and this crazy ability called Resurgence that can bring it back to life once per battle with full health and armor. On top of that, it deals 1 damage to everyone on the battlefield, including your own team, when it revives. That might sound like a bad thing at first, but it actually opens up some very unique combos that other cards can’t do.
I picked Abyssal Elemental because I needed some tanky units with magic attack. It’s not the strongest by stats alone, but it fits into so many setups and works in weird ways that other players don’t always expect. You can use it as a main tank, a second tank, or even just for damage. The fact that it can come back once with full stats means it’s worth more than just one monster slot and when you start mixing it with other abilities and other units, it gets really fun to experiment with.
What Makes Abyssal Elemental Special
Resurgence ability can make this unit revived with full health and full armor. This means it's 2 unit worth in one body. Also deals 1 damage to everyone which can help since it also deals damage to enemies not just your own. For me, that makes it really valuable because it brings both offense and defense in one package. It can tank, deal damage, and reset the fight in a single revive. Sometimes that 1 damage AoE even breaks enemy armor or finishes off low HP cards, which feels really satisfying to watch.
Blast ability is good with magic attack since this ability copies the type of attack. Since it's magic attack and passes through armor, the blast damage also is magic attack that passes through armor. This makes Abyssal Elemental a solid backline attacker in higher levels where Blast is unlocked. It can deal main damage and side damage at the same time, which adds up fast when your opponent’s formation is tightly packed. It also works well in modifiers like Reverse Speed or Aimless because it doesn’t rely on hitting the right target—it just spreads the damage naturally.
What makes this special for me is because Abyssal Elemental is very flexible in terms of positioning and roles. It has decent health and armor to make it act as main tank, secondary tank, to block sneak attacks or just be a damage dealer. The balance of stats is really nice, and since it can come back with Resurgence, it’s very forgiving even if you misplace it a little. You don’t lose its value instantly like most glass cannons. Instead, it can take hits, die, come back, and still keep fighting with the same strength as before.
Since Abyssal Elemental can be reborn with Resurgence, it actually has good health and armor overall for a 6 mana unit. I really like using it when I want something that can stay on the field long enough to make a difference. Most units that revive come back weak or half-dead, but this one returns fully ready to fight again. That’s the part that makes it special for me. It gives that feeling of turning the battle around when everyone thought it was over. It’s not the flashiest unit, but it’s reliable, clever, and rewarding to use when you understand how it interacts with other abilities.
Combos and Strategies to make Abyssal Elemental Shine
Adding abilities at the start of the game to Abyssal Elemental means if it gets revived by Resurgence, the same ability also applies similar to how Rebirth works. You can do this easily by using Prophet Rosa. This makes Shield one of the best things to pair with it. If you give Abyssal Elemental Shield, it reduces all incoming melee and ranged damage making him a really good tank and then when it revives, it keeps that same Shield again. That means your opponent needs to go through its armor, then health, then do it all again once it comes back. For a 6 mana unit, that’s a lot of durability, especially when it also keeps dealing magic damage in between. Shield makes it tankier and it becomes harder to die without magic attackers or heavy damage.
Painforge works when your units take damage from your own units. Since Resurgence deals 1 damage to all units both friend and foe, it can give your units with Painforge 1 extra power. This combo is really cool because you’re basically turning the self-damage from Resurgence into a buff for your team. The revived Abyssal Elemental hits everything once, which activates Painforge, and suddenly your other units are stronger. It’s a small damage boost, but in Splinterlands, small additions like that can completely shift a battle. This gives more value to the damage during the revival part than it just being a punishment for the better version of Rebirth.
Resurgence passes through armor as well so if you have units with Enrage, you can trigger them with Resurgence. This gives your units only 1 damage yet Enrage gets triggered giving melee units +50% damage and speed which is very efficient. That 1 damage doesn’t feel like much, but if you have a unit with Enrage with 5 damage, that's an extra 3 for a measly 1 damage. This combo works best when your lineup has melee all melee units that benefit from Enrage speed and damage and fortunately, we have a modifier to give melee units Enrage. That is "What Doesn't Kill You" so you can try this on your own.
One more thing that really helps Abyssal Elemental shine is that you can plan its position depending on your matchup. In battles with modifiers like Healed Out, you can use it as a strong frontline because it doesn’t rely on healing. The revival part is not considered healing even though it puts you to max health. In Equalizer, it becomes even better because it can come back with full, buffed health which means your enemies need to deal with that problem twice. I can go on and on for every single modifier but the point is this unit is very very flexible and can fit with whatever strategy you have in mind. It’s one of those units that just naturally fits into many modifiers without needing to force it.
Battle in Action
Before I leave, I'll leave you with this sample battle I have with Abyssal Elemental and while this doesn't show you its entire potential, you can get a glimpse of it with this one battle alone.
