That Just Needs More Training!

in Ladies of Hive6 days ago

There are some battles where you just want to try something new and see how it goes. I decided to focus on something I tried before but wasn't really successful, Weapons Training and magic attack units. It’s one of those ideas just keeps attracting me and it's all because of the potential with Marlai Sangariel.
This time, I wanted to see how far Daarg Deadblast can push a lineup I built almost entirely around his Weapons Training ability. Giving attack to units that normally have none. This feels like unlocking some weird hidden power within the team. Let’s take a look at how that plan worked out in this battle.

Battle Breakdown

Modifier in this Battle:

  • Fire & Regret - All Units have Return Fire (returns 50% of ranged damage to attacker, rounded up).

My Thoughts on Modifiers

  • The Fire & Regret Modifier gives all units the Return Fire ability which reflects part of the ranged damage they take back to the attacker. This means using ranged-heavy lineups is risky since they’ll take some damage back every time they hit. My lineup focuses on magic units instead, making this modifier very useless against me. While there are strong range units out there, I find it hard to use since range units have a lot of quirks and special rules that makes them hard to use.

Team Composition

Archon: Marlai Singariel

  • She’s a perfect pick here since all of my units rely on magic attack. Her +1 magic attack really pushes my magic attacking units to a good level that can deal with enemies even if they have Void.

Units Chosen

Unit 1: Halfling Refugee

  • This is my usual go-to tank when I need a solid frontline that doesn’t take much mana. He’s cheap and tough enough to absorb damage while my magic attackers deal with the enemies.

Unit 2: Asel Alagosdil

  • I had an extra 4 mana to use so I decided to include Asel Alagosdil as another tank. She’s not the best option but works as a backup when I want to protect my magic units longer.

Unit 3: Ulundin Overseer

  • A big and reliable tank that becomes more useful with Weapons Training. Once Daarg Deadblast grants him magic attack, he can deal decent damage while still soaking hits from the enemy when the main tanks fall.

Unit 4: Daarg Deadblast

  • He’s the main focus of my team because of his Weapons Training ability. His 2 magic attack is good but what makes him special is he can also give 2 magic attack to the units beside him. This can make the team’s overall damage increase by a lot. Since both his and the Weapons Training students have magic attack, this can be boosted by Marlai Singariel increasing the damage to 3.

Unit 5: Daigendark Surveyor

  • This is my favorite low-mana filler for magic setups. Even though she doesn’t have an attack, she becomes dangerous once Weapons Training gives her magic power. Daigendark Surveyor also have relatively good health and a Magic Reflect in lower levels making her a good backup tank.

Unit 6: Shock Trooper

  • I wanted a unit that can deal heavy damage and punish the opponent for taking too long. Shock Trooper adds that final burst of damage my lineup needs to close out fights fast. The problem is it has Electrified which can deal 1 damage to my team each round if I cannot take the enemy out quick. The pros outweight the cons though so he earned his place in this lineup.

The Battle

Opening Rounds:
My Halfling Refugee died after a few attacks and soon, my Asel Alagosdil too. But that's fine because the two of them absorbed a whole round of damage. Sacrificing those two to get the enemy main tank, Bera Dallin, is a good trade. If their tank goes down, they won't have any tanks anymore which was good while I do in the form of Ulundin Overseer.

Mid-game:
Three turns at the start of round two and their second unit, Kei, goes down as well. With this, they don't have the damage to take down Ulundin Overseer and I have a huge pack on my back to keep the damage up.

Final Rounds:
When Runeseeker Sevaya died, I technically win the game since Commander Goff cannot attack while in the first position. The enemy actually had a good idea but the strategy relied a lot on Bera Dallin being the main tank and also the main damage with her Armored Strike. The problem is they lacked defense. If Commander Goff and Kei was changed to two units with Tank Heal, they have a high chance of winning this game.

Results & Reflection

What strategy I was aiming for:
The goal for this match was to create a team that fully benefits from Weapons Training and Marlai Singariel. By putting Daarg Deadblast in a relatively safe position, I made sure his magic training ability would boost the right units while being safe. This lineup is really good because there are non-attacking units with low mana which means you can use this strategy as well in low mana fights.

What surprised me:
I didn’t expect units with no attack to perform that well. Most of the time, they are just fillers or support but when they gain magic attack through Weapons Training, they turn into real threats especially with Marlai Singariel. It made me realize that I should look more into combinations that awaken the potential of low-cost or passive units.

What I learned:
I learned that Weapons Training can completely change how you see non-attacking units. Before, I just treat them as a tank that can soak up damage. Now, it can be a unit that can attack and can become just as strong as any damage dealer if placed properly beside the right ally. Positioning matters a lot in this lineup because one mistake can mean wasting the benefit of that ability and I will neither confirm or deny that I ever did that before.

Closing Thoughts

This battle showed me how a single ability can be really strong with proper support and synergy. Weapons Training gave life to my non-attacking units. This granted them attacks which increased my chances of winning. It’s amazing to see how the devs can think ideas like this to make the game more fun and challenging.

Magic attack will always be one of my favorite ways to play because it’s consistent and reliable. With units like Daarg Deadblast leading the way, even the most ordinary monsters can become dangerous.
