I had a comment by @elizabethbit on my post yesterday that, in their culture, the middle child often feels invisible because more attention is given to the firstborn and the lastborn.

I understand that perspective of which I respect their culture

But as a firstborn, I want to speak for the middle-borns I know.

They are not always in the spotlight, but that doesn't mean they are unnoticed nor their acts going invisible

I have a younger sister who is a middle-born in our family, and honestly, I have seen how much strength she carries.

As firstborns, we are often expected to be strong. We are the ones who are supposed to lead, make decisions and sometimes carry responsibilities for the younger ones.

But who says the person standing behind us doesn't matter?

My sister has been that person for me, yes she understands me in a way that is sometimes difficult to explain.

She knows when I need advice and when I simply need someone to listen.

There are times I may be trying to figure something out, and she gives me her honest opinion. There are times she helps without making a big deal about it.

And I appreciate it and I'm always grateful

You know what, she doesn't have to be loud to show that she cares, sometimes, it is just a simple check-in that is calling up to check up on me

Sometimes, it is her saying, “Don't worry, we'll sort it out.”
Sometimes, it is knowing that if I need her, she will show up.

So, do middle-borns go or feel unnoticed?

Maybe in some families, they feel that way, but I don't think they should.

Because from where I stand, my middle-born sister is not invisible.

She is part of the strength that helps me keep going.

We, firstborns may stand in front but our middle-borns are the ones making sure we don't fall apart

Middle children are sometimes diverse in that they are "guaranteed to be opposite of their older sibling" and often have the feeling that they are ignored in favor of their older and younger siblings.
