On International Women's Day, to those figures that inspire me

I believe that Women's Day is every day, it is difficult to work for an egalitarian society if we are waiting for a day to come to remember the great female figures who not only bring us to the world, but all those women who in times even the most adverse for the female gender, dared to go beyond.

Likewise, of course I will take this day and I will join in highlighting figures that in my life have been emblematic.

Today I will not go to my family, although, well, I will mention my two grandmothers. My grandmother Hermelinda, my dad's mom, emigrated alone in her early twenties from Mendoza to Buenos Aires in order to become a couturier, then she met my grandfather and her life continued as normal. When I learned that my grandmother had emigrated alone for a dream, I understood a lot about myself. My grandmother Hermelinda was born on September 18th, I was born on September 15th, so we were united by the sign, Virgo, which I don't know if it has much to do with it, but I like to think that we had that in common (among other things).

En el Día Internacional de la Mujer, a esas figuras que me inspiran

Creo que el día de la Mujer es todos los días, es difícil trabajar por una sociedad igualitaria si estamos esperando que llegue un día para recordar a las grandes figuras femeninas que no solamente nos traen al mundo, sino a todas aquellas mujeres que en tiempos incluso de lo más adversos para el género femenino, se atrevieron a ir más allá.

Igualmente, claro que tomaré este día y me sumaré a destacar a figuras que en mi vida han sido emblemáticas.

Hoy no me iré a mi familia, aunque bueno, sí mencionaré a mis dos abuelas. Mi abuela Hermelinda, la mamá de mi papá, emigró sola con unos veintitantos de Mendoza a Buenos Aires para poder ser modista de alta costura, luego conoció a mi abuelo y su vida continuó normal. Cuando supe que mi abuela había emigrado sola por un sueño, entendí mucho de mi. Mi abuela Hermelinda nació un 18 de Septiembre, yo nací el 15 de Septiembre, así que nos unía el signo, Virgo, que no sé si tendrá mucho que ver, pero a mi me gusta pensar que teníamos eso en común (entre otras cosas).

La señora mayor es mi abuela Hermelinda, a quien yo le digo Yaya. Aunque ella ya no esté en este plano, a mi me sigue guiando. / The oldest lady is my grandmother Hermelinda, whom I call Yaya. Although she is no longer on this plane, she continues to guide me.

My grandmother Rosa did not have the same luck or the same courage. Being the oldest of 7 siblings, she had to set an example to a highly structured Italian family, so she was married to my grandfather, a man who cheated on her with numerous women and beat my grandmother violently during a large part of their marriage. After the divorce, demanded by my grandfather, Rosa, my Yayita, managed to slowly recover and was able to recover her relationship with her sisters, with whom she shared trips, nieces and nephews, bingo and family lunches.

When I was born, my two grandmothers took my hand and guided me with much love along a path that one embraced and the other hoped I would not follow in her footsteps as a young girl, instilling in me the study with the objective of achieving my financial independence so I would never have to depend on someone else.

The message of my grandmothers and their great example of life, are today a light at every step I take.

Mi abuela Rosa no tuvo ni la misma suerte ni el mismo valor. Siendo la más grande de 7 hermanos, tenía que dar el ejemplo a una familia italiana sumamente estructurada por lo que la casaron con quien fue mi abuelo, un hombre que la engañó con numerosas mujeres y golpeó a mi abuela violentamente durante gran parte de su matrimonio. Tras el divorcio, exigido por mi abuelo, Rosa, mi Yayita, logró reponerse lentamente y pudo recuperar la relación con sus hermanas, con quienes compartió viajes, sobrinos, bingos y almuerzos familiares.

Cuando yo nací, mis dos abuelas me tomaron la mano y me guiaron con mucho amor por un camino que una abrazaba y la otra esperaba que no siguiera sus pasos de joven, inculcándome el estudio con el objetivo de alcanzar mi independencia financiera para nunca tener que depender de alguien más.

El mensaje de mis abuelas y su gran ejemplo de vida, son hoy una luz a cada paso que doy.

In addition to my grandmothers, I grew up with other figures, who from my childhood until today, became figures I admired and who also accompanied me a lot in my path. Some figures were in my daily life, such as my school teachers. They were always a source of inspiration for me. But there were other characters, real life beings, who even though they were far away from my reality, were references for me.

Among these women I would like to highlight Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Beyond the fact that the Catholic religion in a closed and orthodox way is not my thing, I have my moments of prayer, and since childhood, my mother read me writings of Mother Teresa, bought me one of her books and then as a teenager I looked for her messages. I resonated a lot with what she transmitted and it is to this day that her words continue to inspire me and illuminate many of my days. Mother Teresa of Calcutta's approach to religion also seems to me to be very evolved for her time.

The Virgin of Guadalupe has been another exponent that belongs to the Catholic religion and has always been my guide and a shelter for me, even at times when I was more skeptical and when I turned to science for my search for answers, I always had (and still have) faith in the Virgin of Guadalupe. Her energy fills me with love.

Además de mis abuelas, crecí con otras figuras, que desde mi infancia hasta el día de hoy, se convirtieron en figuras a las que admiraba y quienes también me acompañaron mucho en mi camino. Algunas figuras estaban en mi día a día, como mis profesoras del colegio. Ellas siempre fueron para mi, una fuente de inspiración. Pero habían otros personajes, seres de la vida real, que a pesar de que estaban muy lejos de mí realidad, fueron referentes para mi.

Entre estas mujeres quisiera destacar a la Madre Teresa de Calcuta. Más allá de que la religión católica de manera cerrada y ortodoxa no es lo mío, tengo mis momentos de oración, y desde pequeña, mi mamá me leía escritos de la Madre Teresa, me compró uno de sus libros y después de adolescente yo misma busqué sus mensajes. Resoné mucho con lo que transmitía y es hasta el día de hoy que sus palabras siguen inspirándome e iluminando muchos de mis días. La mirada de la Madre Teresa de Calcuta para con la religión, también me parece muy evolucionado para su momento.

La Virgen de Guadalupe ha sido otro exponente que pertenece a la religión católica y que siempre ha sido mi guía y un resguardo para mí, incluso en los momentos en los que estuve más escéptica y cuando más acudí a la ciencia para mi búsqueda de respuestas, siempre tuve (y tengo) Fé en la Virgen de Guadalupe. Su energía me llena de amor.

Then, other women outside of the spiritual, who have inspired me and who even nowadays come to my memory at many moments to give me a breath of strength, are Madonna, a woman who lost her mother at the age of 5 and who made her own way; Jodie Foster, among the first to assume her sexual preferences publicly, when that was terrifying; J.K Rowling, a woman who literally pulled out of the galley (the galley that was her impressive imagination) a magnificent story, when she didn't have a penny to feed her daughter; Virginia Woolf, a writer who dared to make a place for herself in history when women were asked to change their name to masculine when signing a work.

And... I'm not a Peronist (I don't follow any political party faithfully, I just rescue or reject aspects of the different lines), but I have to mention Eva Perón. When I got a little bit into her history, thanks to being a fan of Madonna, who starred in the movie Evita, I could see in the figure of Eva a strong, courageous woman, who with her sense of justice, managed to give women, in Argentina, an unprecedented space, which undoubtedly marked a before and after in the nation and in the place of women in the country.

Luego, otras mujeres ya fuera de lo espiritual, que me han inspirado y que incluso actualmente se vienen a mi memoria en muchos momentos para darme un soplo de fuerza, son Madonna, una mujer que perdió a su mamá a los 5 años y que se armó su camino sola; Jodie Foster, entre las primeras en asumir sus preferencias sexuales de manera pública, cuando eso aterrorizaba; J.K Rowling, una mujer que literalmente sacó de la galera (la galera que era su impresionante imaginación) una historia magnífica, cuando no tenía un centavo para alimentar a su hija; Virginia Woolf, una escritora que se atrevió a hacerse un buen lugar en la historia cuando a las mujeres les pedían cambiar el nombre por masculino al momento de firmar una obra.

Y… no soy peronista (no sigo fielmente a ningún partido político, sólo rescato o rechazo aspectos de las diferentes líneas), pero tengo que mencionar an Eva Perón. Cuando me adentré un poco en su historia, gracias a ser fanática de Madonna, quien protagonizó la película Evita, pude ver en la figura de Eva a una mujer fuerte, corajuda, que con su sentido de justicia, logró darle a la mujer, en Argentina, un espacio sin precedentes, que sin dudas marcó un antes y un después en la nación y en el lugar de las mujeres del país.

Well dear friends, I hope you are celebrating this day if you are a woman and with the women in your life!

I embrace my womanhood and hope to be in some way, inspiration to some girls, at some point in my life. Right now, I am working on being my own inspiration, based on valuing my own accomplishments, but it is something I struggle with. I encourage women to become their own inspiration as well.

Bueno queridos amigos, espero que estén celebrando este día si son mujeres, y con las mujeres de su vida!!

Yo abrazo mi ser mujer y espero ser de alguna manera, inspiración para algunas chicas, en algún momento de mi vida. En este momento, estoy trabajando en poder ser mi propia inspiración, en base a valorar mis propios logros, pero es algo que me cuesta. Las aliento a las mujeres para que puedan convertirse también en su propia inspiración.
