Gender through the Lens of the Society

In our world today, the roles and expectations tied to gender is still a hotly debated topic. While some argue that the biological and physical disparities dictate the advantages and disadvantages others argue with the holy scriptures. There are no rigid rules about gender instead, societal norms and expectations play a significant role in defining the advantages and disadvantages apportioned to gender.

Historically, gender roles have been dictated by the society. For instance, most societies have different roles assigned to male and female especially in an African setting. As a matter of fact these roles have been placed on each gender right from childhood. Parents train their female children differently from their male children. They already instill in the female child her duty as a caregiver, home builder, baby making machine and lesser to the male counterpart. When a female child outshines a male classmate, the male gets the tongue lashing and the question "how can you allow an ordinary female overthrow you?" arises.

The female is seen as 100% emotional. She's allowed to express herself anyway she can but the male grew up to hear that he's to man up and face the troubles. The society will tell him not to be a woman. They'll say "akọ igi kìí s'oje" that is "a male tree does not drip". So a man will not to cry or express himself. He's groomed to bear heavy loads of responsibilities as dictated by the society.
No wonder we have more grandmas than grandpas.

From a religious point of view, the female folk seem to be at a disadvantage especially when it comes to leadership and participation in worship. I once heard a church leader mention that women are not to be given positions that demands that she preaches to the congregation but she can be a leader of a small unit/department. The amazing part is that they argue that that's what it is from the scriptures. This has dictated how some denominations see the female folk. Some even have separate sections for the male and female. I'm always like really? Yet you claim we serve the same God. When it comes to funding, both make and female have no restrictions but in service to God, there is.
Moreover, I experienced a very heart breaking scene at my state of deployment years back where there is only one place of worship where women are allowed. The others places only allow the men to worship. I saw a scene where a woman who was pressed to pray could not enter the auditorium to do so, she stood by the side of the hall to pray. She's a woman without access to he same God we claim to worship? Interesting.

Perhaps the biological framework had placed a disparity but it's not a disadvantage to the female folk. This should never affect the perception of the female as a lesser figure.

I think there is a subtle disadvantage expressed towards the woman. Here's the thing. Whether in the religious or professional setting. When a man is the leader, you just assign the title. For instance, you'd have Pastor, Apostle or Prophet this and that. In professional setting, it is Professor this or Doctor that. When it's a woman, you'll hear Pastor (Mrs), Professor(Mrs). If we want to show gender difference that bad, let's make it Pastor(Mr) and Professor(Mr). It's that simple.

On my part,I grew up to hear a lot about the woman having a lot of disadvantages. I once heard, the girl child ends up being a disappointment after all. Having male children is like securing trophies. I have been treated many times like someone having half the brain of a man while I was younger. I was not expected to do things properly because I'm a girl. After carrying out my duties, what I get is, well you could have done better but you are a girl right to my face.

Fortunately for me, I took it as a challenge to be better in all I do. Even when the society sees me as being disadvantaged I won't see myself in that light. Well I didn't take it as a competition with the males.

The disparities fueled my curiosity Andi now understood from the religious point of view that those in days of the scriptures also have their cultures and traditions which God only accommodated but never set them as rules. The disparities in the responsibilities of the male and the female stems from misinterpretation of the scriptural context and we take them as God imposing them on us. There are several misconceptions based on a lot of factors I won't be able to explore here.

As a female, I've not found my life harder in any way even with the dictates of the society. There seems to be an easy pathway as long as you are up to the task as a woman. Although it is believed that women sleep their way to the top. Well, I think only women who do not place value on themselves do that. When we all agree to step up our game and refuse to be sex toys, we'd always get what we deserve.

In conclusion, life isn't supposed to be hard for anyone if the society did not place the rules which is now a mindset for many. It's good the mindset is gradually changing in this era of the media. Men are gradually seeing that they can express themselves while women are also rising up to the task especially in leadership. Men are now supporting their women in climbing their career ladders. People are seeing that there are no rigid rules to what a man or woman must do or not do.
The advantages and disadvantages are as dictated by the cultures and traditions in a community. They're not gender based. No one is at a disadvantage or an advantage because of gender.

Hmmm, do you think there won’t be rigid rules to limitation of women, I still think 🤔 there are things men can do that women can’t do better.

I enjoyed reading your post

You're right and it's vice versa which is normal but creating a limiting rule for what a gender must do or not do is the issue here.
