Hello, my friends.
There's a phrase my youngest son loves to repeat, perhaps because he heard it when he was little: "What isn't born, doesn't grow." He's not yet mature enough to understand what it means, but he repeats it whenever he sees a puppy or a small plant.
However, we adults do know what it means. That's why I've taught them to act according to their conscience, to learn to be good people, studious, and disciplined.
Those who don't grow up with these values will never naturally act this way.
This idea is linked to a larger truth: Conscience cannot be imposed. You can do everything right from the outside. You can lead a horse to water, show it the way, even put the water in front of its muzzle. But you can't force it to drink if it doesn't want to.
The same is true with people. You can teach them the rules, explain right and wrong, show them the consequences of their actions. But you can't force conscience into their heads.
You can't force anyone to feel that something is wrong, to feel remorse for a bad action, to feel an inner need to do the right thing.
You can never force anyone to think, to truly reflect on their actions. You can force someone to obey out of fear of punishment, but that's not conscience; it's calculation.
Conscience is internal, personal, and non-transferable. It's a dialogue a person has with themselves. That's why, in the end, everyone is free to decide whether to open their eyes or continue looking the other way. You can be faced with evidence that you've hurt someone and choose not to see it. You can have all the moral lessons in the world at your disposal and choose to ignore them. That's a personal choice, and so is its cost.
However, there is real hope in this very idea. Because if conscience cannot be imposed from the outside, it is not sealed forever either. It is not an irrevocable destiny.
There is always time to rectify. We are born with the ability to evolve, to learn, to change. A person can spend years looking the other way and, one day, decide to open their eyes. Perhaps something will move her, perhaps the weight of her actions will reach her, perhaps she will simply choose to be better.
That is the miracle of human freedom: the possibility that conscience, even if it doesn't arise at first, can grow later. Our job is not to impose, but to sow, water, and trust that, at some point, the seed will germinate on its own.

As imperfect beings, I also believe in the miracle of human freedom, as you say, that the seed of consciousness can germinate on its own. Have a lovely night,
