I am going to tackle the first question with the @ladiesofhive writing challenge this week.

1️⃣ Have you been fortunate to experience a holiday
from a religion or culture different than your own?
If so, tell us about it! If not, which would you choose to experience?

I have experienced a little bit of Greek culture thanks to my sister-in-law who is Greek. I can't really share pictures of her and the celebrations because she is not comfortable but I can share the experience.

My brother and SIL had a very private exchange of vows at sunset on a small yacht with immediate family as it was tough to plan with work as well as family and friends from two different countries.

The registration was done here, in his country and he planned a little something-something for her which included some plate breaking. So when we got back home after the registration, we brought out the plates (bought at Ikea) and all of us took turns wishing them well as we threw the plates on the floor.

Oh boy, was it loud hitting the tiles. We live in a highrise and the balcony garden where we were doing this for easy clean up after, can be seen by every unit above us (our floor is the only one with a balcony garden). The commotion had neighbours looking out their windows and we had to tell them we weren't fighting and it was just custom.

The second time I experienced a little Greek custom was that New Year when we celebrated in their home in Dubai. Families from both sides were there to celebrate their first Christmas and New Year's with them.

Both families brought a little bit of our culture into the celebrations. Her mother baked a cake and there was a coin in it. When it was time, and all of us took a slice, we were told to be careful not to swallow the coin. However, we were hoping for the coin to be in our slice as it would mean good luck all year. I can't quite remember who amongst us got the coin, but it wasn't me haha.

My daughter has been lucky enough to visit Greece and my SIL's family and hometown. I, however, have yet to but maybe someday soon and then I will experience a whole lot more.

Please come join in the challenge and share your stories. You can find out more HERE

Greek celebrations a great fun, now mix Jewish in with that, yes friends of ours, where to nationalities came together in quite an experience of celebration a couple of times. The wedding and then New Year parties over the next couple of years before they left for Australia.

Between plate breaking and dancing it was always a night to remember, oh the cleaning up too... Thanks for triggering some fun memories here!

They do know how bring the fun on haha

Jewish celebrations I have not experienced but I have watched on TV

So I can imagine the two coming together 😊

Many good times, lots of dancing and laughing! Many very mixed cultures marry over here then somehow share traditional into one happy life.

Haha 😊
Must be a commotion with all the plate hitting the floor!
What a wonderful celebration!
I had bit have the experience attending anything Greek.
Thank you for sharing!
Good luck with the contest, @kaerpediem!

It was very loud - ceramic hitting tiles!!
The neighbours thought it was a family fight hahaha

Fabulous description of an experience, somewhat out of the usual. I’ll be referring to your post for my LOH challenge - if that’s okay with you? (See second question)

Yes of course :D
Refer away!

Great story! I was at an Italian wedding and thought I was going to die from all the good food in like eight courses!

Sounds like a wedding I would have liked to attend haha

ᖴᗩT ~ Even some of the letters in that font are "fat!" How fun! Loved your story and I can imagine the clamor the dishes made! 😁

LOL!! I recently found this weird letters generator and thought why not :D
It was very loud ;p

I would love to indulge in some plate breaking. I really want to attend one. Also, is that the same tradition that has the men pulling off garters of their wives with teeth? Can't quite remember.

The new year sounds wonderful and don't worry, your luck would never run out. You seem to have a big family. It's beautiful. ❤️

I googled the tradition for this post and found out that these days plastic plates are used. We did not see that when we planned on ceramic plates haha
It was loud and messy and if you want, just grab one and smash it. Let me know if you actually enjoyed it haha

I am not sure about the garters thingy, and if my brother did it, it wasn't infront of his parents and her parents haha

Awwww, thankyou @deraaa

I can only imagine what the neighbors were thinking when they heard the breaking plates! It's good someone did not call the police to complain or something. 😂🙈

It's my first time reading about Greek traditions like these. Sounds fun!

We had to wave them and tell them it's okay haha
But we didn't finish the 50 plates we had bought. We stopped half-way - it was too loud :D

Fun and also a lot of cleaning up after that ;p

Ah hahaha I imagine the moment when they had to explain that it was just a tradition. How lucky to be able to meet and enjoy other cultures.

Thanks for nice memories share for us.

It really is and you do learn something new ;D

I would love to witness the plate breaking! I bet it was tons of fun, plus it involves everyone in the traditions, whether Greek or not! Thank you for sharing and have a good week!

Best done with ear plugs haha

You have had new and exciting experiences. I have never had a holiday experience of other cultures.

This is a good contest... we discover through each other :D

Oh, you are right. thanks to you, I just think of an idea for this contest. And i’m glad to join it with you. Thank you so much.

I shall look out for it :D

I can only bet you had every bit of fun slamming those plates hehe. It is an interesting way to wish the couple on their wedding :)

Honestly, little awkward nervous sounds escaped my throat every time I threw one
I was worried about the bits hurting them hahaha

Ahh, right. The broken pieces may bounce and can hurt anyone close :) But that is a great experience :)

How cool it is to have such wonderful experiences of sharing with other families and friends from other latitudes that show us with love their customs and traditions, I imagine that for a moment you were worried about breaking so many dishes and it was also fun at the same time! I guess it was even an opportunity to drain hehehehe.

My dad in life for our birthdays, specifically mine, made pranks where he sent to make very beautiful and divine cakes but always with a surprise inside, on one occasion he gave me a spectacular cake and told me: you must be careful when cutting the piece of cake to distribute or when you go to eat .... It turns out that I had to cut piece by piece and carefully, I had about half an hour in that plan until my beautiful mother came and helped me because she knew where the surprise was, meanwhile my dad was sitting in a corner laughing and laughing, as red as a tomato... The gift was a beautiful ring woven with swarosky stones that I still keep. Very beautiful.

Blessings and success in your post.

Awwwww, your Dad sounds a whole lot of fun.
Hmmmm, you are giving me ideas for the next birthday :D

Wow, reading through your blog, I was beginning to imagine how the whole little bit of culture into the celebration went and I won't be missing words if I say it was fun.

I have seen it in movies, so to experience it was fun :D

I am not a wedding crasher, but I come to crash your post.

The sound of breaking plates, I am used to it. I was working as a musician in a bar, in a Greek street in Paris. Everyday, the restaurants were breaking many plates to attract customers. This street was madness, next door to the greek restaurants, it was a bar with naked waiters and waitresses. Good times 😄

What did you think of Dubai?

ALso...Embarassing, that's the real reason I am here. I've been trying to look for the comment with the song you wanted, but you're writing so many comments to so many people, I got lost and gave up haha. Please would you be so kind to direct me in the right direction (that's redundant)?

You have had quite a colourful life.
And now you are sitting on some mountain, singing to the trees, with the wind in your hair, and the sunset as your background.

You can crash anytime you want, as long as you bring your guitar and your voice ;p

Here's an acoustic version of the song ;D

Life full of color indeed, hopefully some more to come!

Yessss! Thriving Ivory, I won't forget this time around. What a cool track! Oh god, it will be harder than I thought!

I have faith in you ;D

I recall being at a celebration with the Coin in the cake.
I was going to be a bit devilish and feign being a choking victim but I scratched that idea for the sake of not causing a Heart attack among the older senior guests.

LOL
That would have been hilarious unless of course ...

You received 5 LADY(LOH) for entering the Ladies of Hive contest.

We believe that you should be rewarded for the time and effort spent in creating articles. The goal is to encourage token holders to accumulate and hold LOH tokens over a long period of time.

Thank you for the LOH
Me likey :D

Wow! Plates breaking! Haven't heard of such tradition, sounds like so much fun to me though 😁 Thank you for sharing

Loud and messy too hehe

Haha lol

Ͳհҽ చҽժժìղց I'm wondering how you could do these fonts of letters. So cute. The first time I heard about the plate breaking in the wedding haha Well, I won't take my future babies to the wedding or they will cry out loud 😁🤣. Thanks for sharing this interesting culture Greek @kaerpediem ♥️

It's a some weird text generator website - just google "weird text generator" and you will have a few to choose from ;D

Or bring them with ear plugs haha

cracking up at the sound of the plates hitting the tile lololol and the neighbors - hurry Barry! call the cops!!! Sheela's in trouble hehehehehe

well at least you have neighbors that are watching out :)

a wedding on a yacht sounds so beautiful - so luxurious - so romantic :)

i love that they were just there alone.... hehehe i hope it was magical for them :)

It was beautiful and they have 3 beautiful kids now :D

isn't that the best???

that's how my sister's family is. i love them to life and death and life again hehehehe

Very interesting. I imagine all your neighbors worried about the broken dishes 🤭. Thanks to this challenge I have been able to get to know many cultures and these customs you share with us seem very interesting to me. Thanks for sharing. Regards!

Until they realised it was some crazy neighbours breaking some good plates in the name of tradition hehe

Basically you all eat the wedding cake but the plates paid the price 🤣🤣🤣 as long as I'm not tasked with cleaning up afterwards I would must likely be scrambling to break the most plates out of everyone there 😁😁

Two beautiful celebrations and a fun read, thanks for sharing it with us.

I think I would have passed you all my plates then hahaha

And guess what, there was no cake hmmmmmmm

oh wow, the wedding tradition is really interesting. Can I ask why they do that?

My guess is it is to ward of evil/bad intentions towards the bride and groom
I could be wrong though

I see. In vietnam, that is a way my parents teach us about compromise when we are in relationships. they would show us that if a dish or a bowl is broken, you will never be able to fix it into a perfect one anymore. That's why I want to ask if they have the same meaning in Greek. Thank you for your response.

You know, that could be it too
I never really asked
I am going to the next time I get an opportunity
