RE: Happy Halloween!

in Ladies of Hive3 years ago

Happy Halloween, Melinda. Halloween is not celebrated here although it is gaining more prominence due to businesses trying to cash in on whatever events that can keep their tills ringing. Of course, this year, it is an almost non-event due to the pandemic. Keep safe.

Does your culture have any traditions to honor the ancestors at this time of year? Like so many long time traditions we have commercialized this one beyond recognition.

We have the QingMing festival which falls in the first week of April.

Chinese families visit the tombs of their ancestors to clean the gravesites, pray to their ancestors and make ritual offerings. Offerings would typically include traditional food dishes and the burning of joss sticks and joss paper. The holiday recognizes the traditional reverence of one's ancestors in Chinese culture.

But, that will soon be a thing of the past. There won't be any cemeteries left. It would all be columbariums.
