What was my favourite childhood toy?
A toy is a piece of plastic, wood, metal, paper etc. What makes it special is memories bound to it. There is game in India known as 'Indian Ludo' by foreigners. In vernacular lingo there are different names like.. अष्ट चंग पो (asht chang po) चांगाबत्ति (changabatti) etc. We called it 'asht chang po.' Asht=8 Chang=4 pe/po=1
In summer vacations I played this with my grandma(dadi). Summer is the season of TARMARIND(imli). Fresh tarmarind used to arrive at our home.Grandma seperated the seeds and I collected them. Then she shaped the seeds with a pestel.
We played this game day and night. It was a happy atmosphere. We celebrated victories and defeats. I chirped after winning like every kid. Grandpa(dada) watched in amazement.
Sometimes one could sense seriousness in the room when it was a close win.
In villages children playing 'asht chang po' is a common site. They draw the game on ground with a chalk and it is their favourite pastime.

Best part is its free of cost.
We rejoiced when 8 or 4 came. It means you move forward 8 steps. I used to be on cloud nine. Those happy sounds still murmur in my ears.
