Grateful for this amazing view!
Good news!
After first having two weekends with barely any back pain, in the past week, the back pain did not return and I was feeling like a different person. As you may remember, I had some heavy medication with tramadol combined with something else that I was prescribed last year when they found the discopathy in my lower back. I cut these back by myself from 2 to 1 after a week but sadly needed to take them for months after as I could not cope with the pain.
My daily life was very limited in many ways, which was quite depressing to be honest. The only flare up I had was during the "treadmill days" but this caused my knees to hurt a lot and when the treadmill was returned, my back pain appeared back slowly getting worse. Then I ended up in the hospital in May for taking these meds too long and was prescribed these tramadol with paracetamol instead. Sadly, they did not take away the pain most days and so I was still very limited. They also prescribed me a bunch of other things which I quickly noticed didn't help me at all, and cut these without any issues.
Hello hernia!
In June, the pain was so bad and a new sort of pain, that I asked for a new MRI scan and found out there was a small hernia in the same area. At least now I knew what it was and I had reason to ask for the heavier meds again. They helped me through it for about 10 days, but I had to take them twice a day (prescribed) while I kept swimming every day to hopefully make things better and wait for the physical therapy to start (still haven't heard back though).
I did not like having to take the heavier meds again because of the incident in May where my heart started racing and I felt like I was in shutdown mode before going to the emergencies. But when you're in so much pain, you don't care anymore.
Celebrating the good days
During these weekends with little to no pain, I was so happy and celebrated these days as a big win because I didn't even know how it felt to be without back pain anymore. If you're dealing with pain that long, you can't even remember how that is.
Last week, the pain didn't return on Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday for that matter.. I decided enough of these meds and didn't take them anymore. I'm like that, it's a bad habit that when the pain is over, I suddenly forget about treatment. This was a stupid move so it seems because Wednesday evening I started to feel the same as I did in May..
Here we go again..
Thursday was worse, but still doable, but to be sure I informed my boyfriend that if something were to happen he should bring me to that same hospital and and told him what to say. He was worried, so was I. I kept calm and stayed in all day. When I woke up on Friday, I already felt shit because the night was rough and during the day my heart was worse but I was sure this was due to the medication I quit taking and I had to sit it out now.
I remembered that I was prescribed calming tablets in May for the night and had 3 left of them. I took one for two nights to help me fall asleep, although yesterday evening I felt quite shit, I didn't need that tablet to fall asleep, thankfully. It's progress.
Doubt
After reading about quitting these meds overnight, I doubted if I should take one again but I figured I'm already days in so better not. Lesson learned though, if I ever end up having to take something heavy as these again, I will slowly reduce the dose. I'm sticking to my blood pressure medication only now.
I feel ok-ish today, but it's still here and I can't ignore the symptoms either which makes my days very long currently but I'm just very happy that I have no back pain currently and I'm quite sure that even when I do one day, a naproxen or paracetamol would do instead of these heavy meds I needed for too long.
Swimming was key
The answer to my pains were swimming! I swam almost daily since the end of June when the pool opened. Only when I didn't feel well or it was passing 35 degrees and high humidity I skipped because I don't want to burn. Today will be the first day that I feel comfortable again to give it a try and I really hope I will enjoy it because I have a bit of a sore (muscle) pain in my back (not where the hernia was but higher) because of the twisting and turning in bed last night. I can easily separate the pains by now, lol.
It's hard to believe that you can be so limited for so long and then within weeks of swimming for an hour a day or so, you go back to no pain. Incredible!
Silver gold stackers
I'm thinking about starting the silver gold stackers engagement initiative up again later this week after @trumpman send me a tip for a question. Thanks for that :) It will be nice to get back into normal routines again now that the summer holidays are halfway over (still 4 or 5 weeks to go).
If you liked to join, and win some HSBI shared that I gifted to people who answered the question, keep an eye out for my posts in the next week. I have some liquid hive while hive is now for sale so I might as well use some for this to grow our stakes, right?
The picture is taken by your truly.
Oh I understand all too well about feeling that your life is limited by your health. It's been very complicated for me for a couple of years now and that's why I'm a little bit quiet around here. I also have now very painful lower back pain but it seems it comes from another thing but I'm being checked. Overall my energy is very limited and I have to plan accordingly to my my day not knowing before if it's going to be a good one. I have started to dance with a silk fans which is very mild and gentle because I was feeling Rusty and movement and I know that stronger exercises are out of my league for now
Ah not good on the back issues! I remember reading about it last year that sucks!
It’s anecdotal but I’ve had good experience with going out and grounding or laying on a grounding mat in the house for chronic pain like this. If you can make your feet touch the dirt or sand without any shoes for 30+ minutes it electrically relaxes your body and many people with pain issues like this report improvement in the severity of the pain. I actually sleep with a grounding pad on my bed at night and it helps especially if I’m sore!
Just food for thought for you over the next few weeks to do a little research!
The famous guy who’s got books on this stuff is Clint Ober, if you want to do some reading!
Hopefully you can get to more swimming so you can help that route, that’s great!
Well, actually it is good because I've not had any pain on my hernia for the 10th day now. The real struggle currently is getting these stupid meds out of my system..
But thanks for that tip I'm going to look it up later because even if the hernia is ok, the discopathy is still there so I bet the pain from that will pop up rather sooner than later. I hope later :)
I'm continuing to swim as many days as I can until the pool of our community closes half September but after that I will probably buy a card for the indoor pool to continue doing so... It's not the same level of enjoyment though haha.
Swimming today, check haha. Now I need to take care of some food.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a great week :)

That's a view worth celebrating indeed. Congrats on being pain-free (or at least in less pain). And yes, swimming is a real godsend for any ailment. Keep on swimming and may your days be of tolerable heat :)
Nice right? And yes, very nice and I'm so happy with it. Now hopefully these meds are out of my system sooner than later so I can really go back to normal lol..
The heat has been between 30 to 35 degrees Celcius for a few weeks now but the humidity is not unbearable every day so that really helps to deal with it. It's mostly the high humidity making it so unpleasant..
Swimming done today, check..
Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
Very smart to reduce the use of pills because in the end every medicine relieves and helps you, on one hand, but kills you on the other hand everything has long term side effects that is what doctors never explain to us every time, but a hernia is not a game every time you can do the sport you like swimming is one of the most complete exercises I hope you get better and have a nice start of the week.
Exactly this, if only a doctor would have explained to me at the time of starting this is just a short term relief, rather than prescribing it to me for months, I would have been more careful. The thing is if you have so much pain and are so limited in your functioning, not taking them is not optional unless they give some other type of painkiller that works.
Swimming turned out to be gold, but I had to wait until June when it opened to find out about that, haha.
So far, all is well, thanks for your comment !LADY
I am so sorry you've had such a hard time with this! The back is hard to help to heal because it is so intricate! I hope the swimming helps.
Thank you for sharing; take care!
Thank you for stopping by and yes, the swimming does wonders!

Your journey with back pain and how swimming has made such a big difference for you! I’ve had my own struggles with health issues, and it's so encouraging to see how sticking to a routine and managing medication carefully can lead to better days. I’m really glad to hear you’re feeling better and back to doing things you enjoy.
I'm sorry that you had your own struggles dear, I hope you are doing better right now? I personally never expected to be in less (let alone free from) pain within 5 weeks of swimming after the hernia diagnosis. Totally blown my mind that this is so good for the back.

May I take the liberty of suggesting a book you might read (or listen too 😃)?
It's called Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection by Dr John Sarno.
I won't go into his theory/methods here because I would not do the work justice, however, I can say that his method has worked for me, once with some progressively worsening lower back pain and recently with some neck pain that was gradually getting worse. I have also seen it cure a friend with nearly debilitating back pain.
He calls it Tension Mytosis Syndrome if you want to read about that, but I'd say that reading the book is the best way to help.
He has two subsequent books, one of which I have read, in case you want to delve further into his teachings.
And if not, that's fine too :)

Although not the same, I have been reading about past trauma causing body pains quite a bit in the past year or so and I truly believe that's a thing. Heck, I even believe it's part of things I experience.
Still, I'm not sure if a diagnosis discopathy and hernia (which I've seen on the MRI images myself) can be caused by that.. I believe my other aches could but these are things that are "temporarily broken" in the case of the hernia and the discopathy is something (If I recall correctly) irreversible.
Yet, the discopathy turns out to not always give pain (which I just discovered recently as the pain stopped being present) so for that matter, I'm aiming to deal with that pain free (of course) rather than accepting that it's part of the diagnosis and take medication.
I'm going to see if I can read these, thanks a lot for that !PIMP

Swimming always helps :D and I hope your back pain won't go back. I find so many benefits in swimming too and do it atleast twice/week or sometimes more. I heard sleeping on the floor also helps with back pain or maybe it's only placebo. I've slept on the floor for decades and I still have back pain from time to time xD but maybe it's worth a try since some people swears by it and even people liken Dr Mandel recommended it.
I'm not in the illusion that I won't have any back pain anymore, I still have discopathy in those discs, I saw it on the pictures of the scan and I think it's not something reversable but now that I know that it doesn't mean that I will be in pain every day, I will clearly aim to relief these symptoms by swimming or whatever else could help!
I believe for some people it can be good to sleep on a hard floor but I've never been able to sleep on any bed that was hard, so this is not for me, that I know for sure lol.
I've emailed the seller of the matrass bought in November last year because that mattrass surely has added to the stress on my back a lot since it started to deform in the middle. I always roll to the middle which is clearly not good for anyone, and will cause back issues even if you have a normally healthy back.
Let's see if I can get them to apply the warranty they give (10 years!)...
I've been there with my Roommate. Pain Management is not an exact science especially around cancer. Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, opioid, etc. We did find certain combinations that worked temporarily. A different combination for the background pain versus another for those Acute ones. Then there the bothersome side effects we have to deal with, all while working around medications that were incompatible with other medications.
I can empathize with your situation having to try to find a balance between managing your pain and still have a reasonable quality of life.
🙏❤️
That sounds horrible, especially going through that decease as things are clearly MUCH worse to deal with at that stage. I'm happy she had you to help her navigate the pharma madness to cope with all that stuff..
It's quite a puzzle, isn't it?
Here things look much better, I'm taking the less heavy version, only half tablets now, and will try to half these next week to stop them fully. The heart palpitations have left a few days ago, so I'm hopeful I'm doing it right.
Looking forward to not needing any of these anymore :)
