LoH #282: Who Gets the Keys When We Leave This Mortal Coil?

Image: I captured this moment in time. Life is so fleeting, so precious, so true. Live in the moment.

@kerrislravenhill - Dear sister,

Your reflections made me smile, then stop and think, because this is such a real question.

These are not easy conversations to have with family. The moment you mention death, inheritance, passwords, wallets, or “my sudden departure from this mortal coil”, people either go quiet very quickly or start acting unusually interested in your login details. But difficult as it may be, crypto estate planning is necessary.

Digital assets do not sort themselves out when we are gone. They do not unlock with good intentions. They do not come with a neat little note explaining what we meant to do with them. Without a plan, value can be lost, misused, or simply left hanging in confusion.

That is why your question matters.

I’ve been teaching Bitcoin, crypto, and Web3, since 2013 and estate planning is a serious part of that conversation. We spend so much time learning how to build, secure, and protect digital assets, but far less time learning how to pass them on. Yet that matters just as much, especially if part of the vision is to leave something of value for the next generation.

So my gentle suggestion not financial advice would be this. Nominate someone you trust to carry out your vision.

Not just someone active on Hive.
Not just someone popular.
And not that one relative who once bought crypto in 2021 and has been calling themselves an expert ever since. :D

I mean someone who really understands stewardship.

Someone who will honour what you built.
Someone who will protect the value.
Someone who will follow your wishes with integrity and good sense.
Someone who sees the account not just as capital, but as legacy.

Because that is really the heart of it. It is not only about who deserves the Hive Power. It is about who can be trusted with the responsibility that comes with it. If you already know what you would want done with those assets, whether for family, community, or a wider purpose, then it makes sense to choose someone who can carry that forward clearly and responsibly.

Otherwise, after spending years building digital value, you may leave behind a treasure hunt no one knows how to finish.

And that is mystery admin from the afterlife.

I put 8 years not just to build this account but built up a network of friends too. I'd hate to see it go to waste with my capital sitting on a digital shelf unused. I want to know our community will benefit after I am gone.

I leave also a repository of information and stories regarding my past family legacies that my descendants may read in the future. Information and stories that would have been lost through time. What they went through, what they endured and their successes.
Some will conclude that their "Chinese Auntie was a bit nuts, but it was for the good of others."

BTW, My elder son currently has my 'keys', my acting custodian at the moment.

Thanks for sharing @wordsofwealth

Ah @kerrislravenhill this, is so beautiful! What you have built is not just capital. It is years of your life, your friendships, your words… your energy, Hive beat - your heart beat … and a record your family will one day treasure.

I really felt the part about leaving stories behind, because that is legacy too.

Awww, and I smiled at the Auntie line. The women who think this far ahead are often the ones carrying the deepest wisdom.

I love that your son already has your keys. That says trust and foresight.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. I’m so glad that we are having conversations like these.

What you are leaving behind is not just wealth. It is memory, meaning, legacy, and provenance. Much like blockchain, it preserves what mattered and shows where it came from.

I truly like your thoughts on this matter. Yes choosing someone who values stewardship is the key. It means selecting a person who will nurture, protect, and grow the account with care and integrity. Someone who sees it not as an opportunity but as a trust that should be handled wisely.

Ahh, you said this so well, @sarahbaby.

Stewardship really is the key, because it reminds us that these accounts are not only assets to be handed over. They are trusts to be carried with care, integrity, and intention.

That distinction matters so much.

Thank you for adding this.

I really appreciate that word.

You have said it all, the continuity of this hard labour you have taken time to build is what matters the most. Not some one that will just come in to squander the whole wealth. That's okay?

Indeed! These conversations are vital before we build, whilst we build and after we build. Right?

You are accurately right, thank you for sharing.

You’re so welcome @ijebest.

Thank you so much my sis...!
