Not food. Ingredients.
A tomato. Half an onion. Two eggs. A bottle of sauce I do not remember buying. And one heroic piece of ginger that has survived so long it now seems less like produce and more like a tenant.
I stood there in that cold little light hungry and betrayed.
Because that is one of life’s rudest tricks, isn’t it? A fridge full enough to inspire hope, but empty enough to leave you eating toast and calling it a meal. Everything in there looked busy. Everything looked involved. But not one item had the decency to say, “My sister, this is not dinner. Lower your expectations and fetch the bread.”
If I could redesign the world in one small way, I would start there.
I would make ordinary life easier for tired people.
I would make ingredients tell the truth. No more sitting in the fridge looking organised when all you really are is a collection of separate problems. If all you can offer me is confusion, say so early. Do not let me stand there imagining a home cooked miracle when what we really have is half a plan and a condiment.
I think the world needs more simple joy too. Not grand joy. Not fireworks and violin music. Just the small faithful kind that rescues an ordinary day before it turns against you.
A proper meal when you are hungry. Tea made right. Warm bread. Clean sheets. A message from someone who loves you enough to make you laugh for no reason. These are not small things to me. These are the quiet mercies that return a person to herself.
So yes, if I could change the world, I would begin with the lying fridge.
And if I could multiply one simple joy, I would give people more small comforts, more ease, and food that understands the assignment.
Because not every meaningful change has to be grand.
Sometimes the holiest reform is dinner that comes together without a committee.
