Mount Fuji, located on the island of Honshu, is the highest mountain in Japan, at 3,776.24 m (12,389.2 ft). This mountain is the second highest volcano located on an island in the Asian continent (after Mount Kerinci on the island of Sumatra), and the seventh highest peak of an island on Earth. Mount Fuji is an active volcano that last erupted from 1707 to 1708. It is located about 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Tokyo and can be seen from there on clear days. Mount Fuji's cones are very symmetrical, and are covered in snow for about five months of the year. The mountain is commonly used as an icon of Japanese culture and is often depicted in works of art and photography, and is visited by many tourists and climbers.

Mount Fuji is one of the "Three Sacred Mountains. along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. This mountain is one of Japan's Historic Sites. It was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22, 2013. According to UNESCO, Mount Fuji has been " inspired artists and poets and became an object of pilgrimage for centuries". UNESCO recognizes 25 cultural sites of interest within the Mount Fuji region. These 25 locations include the mountain and Shinto shrine, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha, and Taisekiji Temple of the Head Buddha, founded in 1290. , which was later depicted by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
