I am not an adult yet but I believe that there is one thing every proper adult should know how to do and that is to stop explaining themselves. I am still learning this as I go along because whenever people misunderstand me, the first thought in my head is that I need to explain myself better and I believe in my heart that as long as I say something right then they will understand me. So yeah, I can sometimes talk myself into thinking that if I explain myself a few more times it will finally get into their heads.
Anyway, more often than not, this can lead to confusion because the other person does not know the extent of your meaning and just thinks that you are making a bigger deal out of it than necessary. I am still growing up and learning to accept that I can't dictate how people take things that I say and that all I can do is explain myself truthfully and this wasn't an easy lesson for me to learn.
In these situations, Iike now I try to ask myself if I have already told them everything that I need to tell them, and sometimes I stop there because I think that what I already said was enough for them to understand, despite a part of me telling otherwise. But I have a story to tell which wasn't very long ago and there was a situation that I still recall.
I almost gave myself anxiety trying to get someone to understand me and I think it was pretty funny when I realized how much sense I was already making. When I then did think I made sense it made things much easier looking back to realize that maybe someone could have misunderstood me and instead of having to explain myself over and over I could have just said what I wanted to say in the beginning.
For me it is not about dismissing people and being arrogant about mistakes that I have made but more about the fact that sometimes it is not about explaining yourself but proving yourself and I think I am still learning when to do one or the other.
