You are correct, it is definitely not a bassoon!
But since I am in the ballpark with that “reedy” and deep sound, my next guess is the contrabassoon (the double bassoon).
It has that same dark, double-reed quality but is even lower and “rarer” than a regular bassoon. Am I getting closer? 😊
Closer, and a good guess, but not quite there yet 😌 contrabassoon has a much lower notes. Also my instrument may sound 'reedy', but uses no reed.
