The large ship sunk at Tobermory is the Sweepstakes, a 119-foot, two-masted wooden schooner built in 1867. In August 1885, it struck a rock near Cove Island, sustained severe hull damage, and was towed to Big Tub Harbour. Deemed beyond repair, it sank in September 1885
