I want to agree with your first paragraph but then, I find it hard to do so. Honesty is good, but most people can't actually handle the truth. Humans are imperfect and would always mess up.
Trust me, Soma, you can't be 100% honest with your partner, thus, the introduction of white lie, sometimes, pure lies, just to protect your partner.
