We had a little visitor in the garden. Baby hedgehogs should not be out in the day, but it seemed healthy and I kept watch until it went somewhere safe from cats. It was sniffing at my shoe at one point.

What a cute little guy (or girl)!
We've seen some here before and it's good to know that are still around.
or 'somewhere safe from shoes'. Hahaha
Does that tiny sharp body part fly out when they sense they are in danger like we see in movies?
They just curl into a ball when threatened. The spines are sharp, but do not fly off.
Film tricks, damn! Thanks for responding.
Porcupines can release, but not fire their spines. Those are much bigger animals and not native here.
Oh, maybe I am mistaking this animal for Porcupines.
Hedge hog. Can cats bite them?

A cat may try to 'play' with them, but it could be painful for the cat. They may also pick up fleas.
Wow, I see. Are they free where you live?
They are part of the local wildlife. They eat pests so we want them around.
