That point you raised about demands is quite interesting, @cagolistic. However, I think for newbies... The best approach is to show commitment to the project and help out little by little, then move on to making more substantial contributions later on.

The best thing newbies can do is show some real commitment to the cause. Eventually, their work will be duly noticed.
The obstacle here is that it takes time, and the vast majority of them decide not to pay to see the results of so much hard work.
