Connecting My Dots to Get What I Want

Life has a funny way of teaching us that everything we go through, good or bad, eventually makes sense. Sometimes, we don’t understand why we face certain challenges, meet particular people, or take specific paths. But when we look back, the pieces start to fit together like a puzzle. That’s what I call connecting my dots. It’s the realisation that nothing in life is random, and every experience is part of the process of getting what I truly want.

For a long time, I believed that success came from straight lines a clear, predictable path from point A to point B. I thought if I planned perfectly, stayed disciplined, and avoided mistakes, I would reach my goals faster. But life doesn’t work that way. Instead of straight lines, it gives us dots: small, seemingly disconnected events, choices, and lessons that only make sense when you connect them later.

The truth is, we all have dreams and desires things we want to achieve, places we want to be, and versions of ourselves we want to become. But between where we are and where we want to be lies a journey filled with trials, growth, and learning. That journey is made up of our dots. Some dots are moments of victory, such as graduating, starting a business, or meeting a mentor. Others are moments of pain failure, rejection, heartbreak, or disappointment. But both kinds are equally important.

When I started seeing my life as a collection of dots rather than mistakes or coincidences, everything changed. For instance, there were times I felt stuck in a job I didn’t like, not realising that the discipline and skills I gained there would later help me manage my own business. There were times I faced rejection from people or opportunities I thought were meant for me, but those rejections redirected me toward better paths. Each of those moments was a dot waiting to be connected.

Getting what I want now isn’t just about hustling harder; it’s about seeing the bigger picture. It’s about trusting that the dots I’m creating today through hard work, consistency, and faith will connect to form the future I envision. This mindset gives meaning to every season. It means I can fail and still move forward because even failure adds another dot to my story.

One thing I’ve learned is that connecting your dots requires patience. We often want instant results, but growth takes time. The plant doesn’t bloom the same day the seed is planted. In the same way, the things we do today —reading, learning, networking, and showing up —might not pay off immediately. But when the right time comes, the connection becomes clear.

Another key is awareness. Sometimes we’re so focused on what we don’t have that we fail to see how much progress we’ve already made. Taking time to reflect helps us see patterns. Maybe you’ve noticed that every major breakthrough in your life came after a setback. Or that the people you’ve met recently are all connected to the dream you’re pursuing. That awareness helps you move more intentionally because you begin to realise that nothing is wasted.

Also, connecting your dots isn’t just about the past; it’s about creating new ones for the future. Every choice you make now sets the stage for the kind of life you’ll have later. Every book you read, every skill you learn, every relationship you build those are dots being formed. The clearer you are about what you want, the more deliberate you can be about the kind of dots you create.

At this point in my life, I’ve learned to appreciate the process. I’ve stopped forcing things to happen my way or in my time. Instead, I focus on being consistent, learning daily, and keeping faith in the bigger picture. I might not see all the connections yet, but I know they exist. When I look back someday, I’ll see how every choice, every challenge, and every moment worked together to lead me exactly where I was meant to be.

In the end, connecting my dots is about more than just achieving goals it’s about finding peace in the process, purpose in the pain, and meaning in the journey. It’s about trusting that everything I’ve been through, and everything I’m doing now, is part of a grand design leading me toward what I truly desire. So, I keep creating dots one step, one lesson, one experience at a time because I know one day, they’ll all connect to reveal the masterpiece I’ve been working toward all along.
