I think the most important thing is the meaning and the evocation of both the plum bread and the gifts. They evoke family, togetherness, peace, children's illusion, even if it is just for a small chocolate, and above all they evoke those traditions you are talking about.
It doesn't matter the country or place and whether or not Christmas is celebrated according to beliefs, but what matters is the deepest, the universal love and that family that forges tradition.
