There are situations in life that happen precisely to make us realise that what we thought was not real, or is different from how we imagined it. I’m so very sorry to hear of your aunt’s passing; it’s a great, great sorrow, but that event made you realise that the family your cousin was going to marry into wasn’t what it seemed. It’s just as you said: two people come together in marriage, and that should mean cooperation and understanding, and from what I can see, that’s missing.

I realise there may be many losses, but perhaps a difficult future has been averted. I think you’ve done the right thing. A big hug!
