My son is only six years old, and yet I admire his determination when he finds something he's passionate about. I first witnessed this when he tried an electric guitar and fell in love with it. He even had a guitar solo dance he would do every so often when he was excited. Sadly, his interest in it faded after about four months of taking lessons, but I'm glad he got the experience. Now he's on to a new passion: chess.

I think he was introduced to the game while spending time at my father-in-law's house. He came home one day and was obsessed. He liked it so much that he even downloaded it on his tablet. I was stunned, but also very happy about it. It means his mind is formulating strategies, trying to plan ahead and anticipate moves, and I think it's great for a developing mind!
He even convinced a friend of mine, whom I consider an adopted brother, to play chess with him after Thanksgiving dinner. He had never played before, so it was interesting to watch the two of them. They played for at least an hour or two and had a blast! They'd go back and forth, with each of them winning some and losing others.
When you think of post-Thanksgiving meal activities, usually you picture shopping, watching football, maybe playing board games, but chess? If I had a bingo sheet, this would never have been on it!
With Christmas coming up, I'm sure someone is going to end up buying him a chess set. I think it's great that he'd rather spend an hour playing some rounds of chess instead of watching TV or playing mindless games on his tablet. These are the moments I really treasure. I hope this passion is one that he continues, even if it's simply for the love of chess.
I look back at all the things I got interested in as a kid. I loved that my parents encouraged and supported me, whether it was learning to play the saxophone or build my first website. I want to do the same for my son. I can't wait to watch him grow and see what he does!
