I constantly contend that our first language is always the same sounds we made as infants. Language came along after. The language of thought is an interesting one too, and one thing that I am always fascinated by in people who can speak more than one language.
When do you stop thinking in one tongue and start thinking in another? Do you "think" in English, or in Indonesian?
Do you swap?
I think in English and speak both. I stopped thinking in Indonesian due to an accident almost a decade ago now. It has been a topic I am hugely interested in because our brain is mysterious and I am one of those examples of how a brain injury could alter the way we perceive and speak.
So far, I don't swap at all and even in my dreams, it is not in Indonesian anymore and I have a lot of tip of the tongue moment when it comes to Indonesian 😄 and I am definitely slower if I were to learn things in Bahasa Indonesia than English.
Very interesting indeed! Thank you for sharing your response, it is appreciated and a great insight into what makes you, you, and in a tiny way, perhaps what makes us all so interesting as individuals. It is all the variance.
Indeed, it's fascinating how human can be!
