Introvert Talks - The New Voting System Is Good But...

"Introvert Talks" is meant to be a new initiative or theme, where I myself as an introvert, just talk about reflections and thoughts about my life, or maybe share more personal stuff. :)

This is my weekly post under this "Introvert Talks" theme and let's see where it takes me and us.

If you haven't realised, Hive just underwent some changes! The terms used are HF28 or Hard Fork 28, but for me, the main noticeable change was the voting system.

Back then, the vote value was sort of pro-rated based on our voting mana, which recharges over time, but decreases/decays via curating/voting posts and comments. Now, the vote value is independent of voting mana now. What this means, a 100% vote gives the same value regardless whether your voting mana is fresh at 100% or halfway down at 50%. In the past, for this same scenario, the vote value would have been halved.

Being a Hive user that curates manually, and enjoys doing it, I gave this new methodology a few days and to my surprise, I actually prefer this new voting system.

For one, it largely resolves the difficulty I had with meeting the 2 cent minimum threshold. I am sure most Hive users would be familiar with this minimum threshold. I used to think this would be more of an issue for new Hive users, who have lower HP to start with, but I never thought I would face this issue in the past week. Being someone who has a net of over 8,000 HP after deducting for HP delegation, I didn't have a high vote value and it was always of a meaningful level. But in the past months, the price of Hive (in USD) fell and fell, and my vote value (which is priced in USD) followed the same trend and was down to the region of 4 to 5 cents. The tricky part came when a pro-rata was applied to this 4 to 5 cents based on my voting mana, and being an active curator, I really struggled with keeping up with the 2 cent votes.

Of course, I did think of multiple options to resolve this. This included buying and powering up Hive (using external funds or HBD), or reducing my HP delegations (which was to projects that I supported), or being more selective to my curation behaviour, etc. In the end, I didn't have any strong views towards any because no one knows how much further Hive can drop, these were more like quick fixes. Deep down, I just decided to efficiently manage my voting time against the recharging of voting mana, and hopefully, wait it out till the price of Hive recovers.

Wow, I didn't realise I ended up blabbering two long paragraphs about this problem I was facing and trying to resolve. Feels good to let it all out actually, on an Introvert Talks post. How apt.

Anyway, back to the topic, this new voting system actually resolves the issue because as long as I know my full vote value for the day, I would know how much is 100% worth, how much is 50% worth, etc. All I need was to manage the voting frequency, and I also observed that every 100% vote uses 2% voting mana, so that's about 50 full votes, or 100 50% votes, or a similar combination.

And that somehow brings me to the "downside" of the new voting system. On the first day of the new voting system, I was not aware and went around giving high % votes (because I needed to meet the 2 cent threshold under the previous voting system), but it turned out that I was actually giving out 4 to 5 cents instead. And just one day worth of votes, my voting mana was "sabotaged" significantly, and I almost depleted all my voting mana. o.O

And because this is irreversible, I now have another challenge to find a smart way to refill this voting mana, while at the same, still curating posts and comments. As of now, my voting mana is barely around 10%. Hopefully it gets better in the next few weeks. Wish me luck. Hehe!

And that's all I have this week! Let me know your thoughts on the new voting system, or if you have any tips to better manage the voting mana! :)
