Health issues year

in Reflections9 months ago (edited)

It's been a little annoying year in terms of health, this is the sign you start becoming old.

Last summer I was bitten by a wasp while cycling. I immediately started feeling weird signs in my body and lost consciousness while cycling back home. Little I knew what was going on but ended up at the hospital with a bunch of tests which showed I was fine and they sent me home.

I was not convinced about the doctor's report at the hospital and decided to visit an allergy specialist after reading some articles online. It turned out I suffered a shock that could have killed me and the doctor suggested starting a 5-year treatment where they give you vennon shots regularly, weekly initially and monthly after 15 sessions, increasing the dose every time to train your body to react. I also have to wear adrenaline shots with me in de event I get bitten again as there is always the risk of death. I didn't even know I was allergic at all.

Due to the treatment, I stopped mountain biking as I always do it alone and was not comfortable with the risk.

Last June we (my wife and me) visited a digestologist as we had been feeling uncomfortable for quite a while with digestion issues. He requested a few tests and last Thursday we visited the doctor again with all the test results. It turned out we both have gallstones, stones formed within the gallbladder from precipitated bile components. We both will have to go through surgery in September.

I am 56 and never had any health issues at all except minor things, All of a sudden two important ones in a short period of time. This is reminding me I am getting old and need to focus more on important things in life. Health and family and try to enjoy life as much as I can instead of focusing too much on work.

My parents are also getting very old, 85 and 87 years and need more and more support every day.

Nicely, yesterday I went cycling with my son and he took the picture above. I was late and we ended up getting home at 10 pm when it was already dark. I suffered as I am not in shape but enjoyed my time cycling with him, he is 21 and I am aware I will not have a chance to go cycling with him for long as he is getting stronger while I get weaker, but spending time in nature with him is a real pleasure.

I am not sure what causes gallstones, but since you both have them, is it diet related?

I have never heard of the wasp thing, that is crazy!

That's what we thought but the doctor said it is not related to diet at all, it is usually due to family heritage. My wife has a sister who suffered the same 20 years ago and it must have been a coincidence we both checked and happen to have them.

Gallstones are very common, unfortunately, but the surgery is not so bad. If no complications happen, you're out in 2 days, 3 max.

yes, that's what the doctor told us. The main issue is the diet before and after surgery.

Yes, diet will be needed, but trust me, little by little you will know what you can eat and what you can't. The diet is not too bad either.

I didn't know about these issues, hope you get recovered soon

Thank you.
Enjoy your vacation in Madeira.

Unfortunately most of us have to deal with health issues when we get older. Some more, some less. But excercising is important to keep the body fit. You won't be able to catch up with your son anymore, but I guess he is willing to hold in a bit to make rides with you won't he.
Good luck with the surgery.
