Between One Line

in Reflections • 2 days ago

For my birthday I got tickets to see Jimmy Carr perform his latest stand-up routine. Carr's style and humour is not to everyone's taste, since he tends to do a lot of one-liner comedy, but it is incredibly clever at the same time. Plus, for someone who is so well spoken, his style is dark.

This is the second time I have seen him, though my wife didn't know that when she booked the tickets. She said after that after the opening, she wasn't sure she was going to like it as it was just one line after another, but once he started interacting with the crowd, it really showed how talented he is as he was able to build upon what they were offering, and he got surprisingly brutal with some of them. Nothing is really off the table with him.

Taking comments from the audience is where he seems to enjoy himself the most and it is where the crowd enjoyed too, which was one of the lessons he wanted to share along the way. That it is the interaction that keeps him going, the shared experience, and the the momentariness of it. Live is so much better than watching on a screen. He is incredibly quick-witted and through years of experience and practice, he has multiple comebacks for pretty much anything that is thrown at him.

At the end of the show they went through texts that had been sent to him by the audience and one was from a girl who had been sneaking away once a month to Helsinki to do stand-up, without telling her boyfriend. He supposedly found out at the show. However, Carr was saying that this is what people should be doing more, where instead of being an eternal audience, we participate in what we enjoy. Be part of it in some way, even if we aren't able to earn from it, or we aren't that great at it. Find a way to be amongst it as more than a viewer.

I think that while we probably have more access to participate now, I reckon less of us actually are being part of the things that we love. Instead, we end up being voyeurs of what we love, not players. And again, this is something that he mentioned in his routine that resonated, that when we do what we are into, it is play. Play is how we learn, but it doesn't mean the game is easy, nor does it mean it feels good in my opinion. But when we are doing what interests us, what we are passionate about, we are able to push through the pain to keep on playing the game.

This got me thinking about something I have written about here in regards to myself never really being a fan of anything enough to dive into it. And I wonder if it is because I had pain in so many other areas, that I just didn't have enough energy left to play the games I was interested in. Which in turn got me thinking about my last article on opportunity and discrimination and how if we have to spend a lot of time and energy fighting just to survive daily life, how will we have enough left over to spend on what actually matters to us?

I guess privilege is being able to play the game unencumbered by daily struggles, to be able to focus and have the energy to put into interests. And it could be that this is part of the reason that people are not participating and are becoming pure consumers and users alone. Because the more we struggle, the less energy we have to spend and being a user is the easiest way to participate. We can live vicariously through a screen and "feel" like we are part of something, without spending our energy. But, it is a spiral downward, because the more we consume, the less energy we have to spend on the things that matter, as our time, skills and potential ebb away into the pixels.

With all the resources we have in this world, there needn't be as much suffering as there is, and there could be a huge amount of improvement made where we are active participants in our fields of interest, rather than scraping the bottom of the barrel by scrolling through feed after feed in the hope of finding something that delivers us into a better experience. Life on scroll is not a life well-lived, it is settling for the lowest form of living, that will continually generate new lows.

A lot of us don't have the opportunities we need.

A lot of us waste the opportunities we have.

I like to participate, just a feature of my personality. At my work I don't have to do anything, I can just easily collect the paycheck and not do anything. Be the stereotypical government employee 😀

Instead I push us to be constantly on the Cutting Edge technologically, security and quality wise. I talk to Microsoft guys all the time and we are actually ahead of many groups at Microsoft...

I push not because I can get anything out of it, but because it's fun for me to play with emerging technologies, it's like a game. I am at the very top of my career path. I don't want to be a manager so they can't promote me and they can't give me a raise because I am already at a max step. We don't have bonuses, the only thing I can get is a 5% annual merit bonus that is given every year for above outstanding performance. I have that to loose if I slack I guess, but it is hardly a motivational factor 😆

I wonder what it would be like if we all were in a position where we were playing the best game for who we are and our skills.

What do you think would make you want to shift role?

I don't know what it would be, I think I have pretty good balance in my work life right now...

Wish I had a bit. I have the life part okay - it is the work bit that I don't have enough of :)

A very Happy Birthday to you, I hope your health is holding up and the family are all well.

I was seated with Jimmy Carr on a very busy train from Leeds to London, late one Sunday night about 18 years ago. He was very polite when he sat down and just worked away on his laptop and wished me a safe journey when we got off. I'm not a huge fan of his comedy but he's obviously a very intellectual fella. I enjoy his measured and intelligent interviews and podcasts hes been doing lately.

Nice to see you still sharing your thoughts here. Long may you continue.

My best wishes.

Interesting you say, because one of the questions he was asked tonight was about private school and he said that he didn't go to one (I think UK call them public schools - which is weird to me), but went to university and became more well-spoken there.

Nice to see you still sharing your thoughts here. Long may you continue.

Cheers and hope you are having a grand old time in life :)

Thank you! Just into my 7th decade and still tearing it up 😉

on the dance floor? ;D

They call it public schools because it's open for everyone to attend - that's the theory. Bit ironic really, isn't it?

This dude's pretty smart; he was here not long ago and some friends missed out. Due to all the fuckassery in our lives at the time we chose not to go but will go next time. I've watched some You Tube videos of him and it's pretty clear to see the guy's intellect...but for sure the show wouldn't be for everyone I think.

I'd say happy birthday to you but that's a long way off yet. 😂

Having said that, I got an early birthday present this week...it rhymes with Shmarley Shavidson.

Definitely worth it next time he is in Oz. Pit it was a Thursday, as we just got to the show and left straight after. Would have been nice to have dinner or a drink with friends who were also there (not sitting with us).

Ha! That's awesome. I heard a rumour from a little monkey you were going to visit a bike shop :)

Oh yeah, he knew but doesn't know I bought one. I asked him to guess where I was going and he could have three questions.

He's like:

  1. Does it have two wheels.
    Me: Yes.
  2. Does it have an engine.
    Me: Yes.

Smart little fella.

He tried to play the same game with me and gave the most obscure hints :D

His hints are not the best, that's for sure.

I know you're probably speaking a lot more generally but please allow me to introduce you to fanartists and fanwriters XD

there are very specific people I do actually wish would participate a lot less x_x

I remember trying to explain to someone that a "conspiracy theory" (may not be a conspiracy) that I have harboured for a while is that governments very deliberately go out of their way to make things as difficult as possible to pretty much guarantee that most of the population will make the absolute most stupidest decisions ever that favours whatever bullshit the governments want to force through at the time.

it could be that this is part of the reason that people are not participating and are becoming pure consumers and users alone

Pretty much, and also why some "kids these days" have zero work ethic.

Definitely true, though the expenses and obstacles constantly in the way can make it seem impossible sometimes. I figure if we keep trying it motivates other people to try too and we get somewhere eventually.

I was speaking more generally. There are always a minority of active people, but I think that minority is getting more narrow also.

is that governments very deliberately go out of their way to make things as difficult as possible to pretty much guarantee that most of the population will make the absolute most stupidest decisions

I have a similar conspiracy, that the governments are the ones spreading the conspiracies and that when they prove true, they are doing that too to say later, "we told you" - I once wrote an article about it :D

Pretty much, and also why some "kids these days" have zero work ethic.

There definitely isn't much grind culture - unless it is coffee grind.

though the expenses and obstacles constantly in the way can make it seem impossible sometimes.

It is another artificial hurdle set up so only a few can ever succeed.

but I think that minority is getting more narrow also.

Maybe, though once again I think we're heavily biased by the company we keep ^_^;

unless it is coffee grind.

We have a coffee grinder. It's kind of therapeutic XD though I haven't used it for a while (we have coffee beans and a French press but I haven't had any yet as I've been way too lazy to try to figure out what amount of milk or condensed milk I would need to add to make it drinkable for me, JJ uses it daily).

It is another artificial hurdle set up so only a few can ever succeed.

Fully agree and I've said this many times too.

I approve lol. Jimmy is very quick with his come backs and the heckling is the best part of the show. Not for everyone but those who can laugh at themselves without taking offence. These days people are so fragile and are too easily shocked even when taken in jest. Kevin Bloody Wilson used to also shock audiences for those hearing him for the first time and his daughter is far worse. If people could laugh at themselves more then the world would be a far more enjoyable place.

and the heckling is the best part of the show.

For sure. There were some decent attempts, but some terrible ones too.

and his daughter is far worse.

I have never heard about her! Will have to look.

I guess it’s kind of like dancing. Sure, there are steps you’re supposed to follow, but who cares if we’re in sync, as long as you’re having fun

This is true. But you are from Cuba (if I remember) so being in sync is part of the culture. At the same time, I know lots of dancers who learn all the steps, but can't dance to the music and have no feel for their partner. It looks terrible :)

There are always excpetions. To be Cuban and a bad dancer it's like a sin. But that's the idea. No matter if the people look at you as a freak,if you have fun, you are good.

Happy Birthday🎊✨️🎂🍻🍻🍻 hope you had a wonderful time.

My dad always said to keep uour self occupied in whatever you do. And when I was at corporate job, i kept myself busy not only with my profile but also ubderstanding what others doing. Better to be involve in complete cycle than sticking to my job. Ultimately it help me to identify many loopholes in the process and streamline the process. Sometime pushing beyond the limits help us to succeed in many ways. And ultimately my dad teaching never got wasted.

Better to be involve in complete cycle than sticking to my job.

This is pretty much the only way to keep advancing through an organisation.

I think our own experiences and assumptions influence the way we read even a few simple words.

We apply meaning to something very quickly, and believe we are correct.

Happy birthday to you sir, wishing you all the best. Guess you really had an engaging and interesting day.

My b'day was actually 6 months ago, but it is close enough :)

I think we all need more hobbies. Just in general. I have a couple, but I really feel like I need some more. Just to keep life more exciting. I'm glad you enjoyed the stand up show. I have been to a couple in my life. Never this guy. I'd love to see Taylor Tomlinson live one day. She busts me up.

I stopped to read your thoughts and I agree with how that line we cross as time goes by makes us reflect. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you many more years to come, but above all, may they be accompanied by good health and complete independence – which is what truly allows us to carry on living life on our own terms.

To be honest, at my age my outlook has changed quite a bit. I no longer celebrate the mere fact of adding ‘another year’ to the calendar. These days, what I truly celebrate is the peace I’ve managed to find; and seeing my loved ones thrive, especially Matthew. At the end of the day, I believe that peace of mind and knowing that our loved ones are well is what truly gives value to the years we mark.

Warmest regards, and I hope you had a wonderful time...

People often talk about success as if everyone has the same amount of time and energy to pursue their interests. Someone struggling to meet basic needs may have the desire and talent but lack the room to develop them

I didn't realise Jimmy Carr was that popular outside of UK. We have so many comedians now, coz it seems like everyone who doesn't act or sing calls themselves a comedian.

Happy (belated? I guess?) birthday!

What’s one skill you’d pick up if energy wasn’t a limit?
