We are animals, "rational," yes, but animals.

Animals are possibly rational too. Maybe more so? If rationality is acting the best one can on what one knows, animal instinct is precisely that.

The example isn't concerned with learning, it is about what is learned and onboarded as truth. You and I and everyone carries a unique makeup of "truths" that we assume correct, when they are just our perspective of our experience. If we had lived our lives from a different observation point, the same events would elicit a different experience. Raised by wolves, raised by cruel parents, poor parents, loving parents - it is all the same process - the lessons learned that become our personal truths can vary greatly, even amongst people who might have a near identical experience.
