Aliens really are our only hope. I think they should be probing a few of the leaders now.
Nuclear fusion would be wonderful, or some other cheap, clean energy - but even then, would it be distributed cheaply and cleanly?

Yep - this is what I imagine. I reckon it is happening with a lot of clean tech - bought up by corporations and buried before getting close to market.
