I think it is a bit of both. It is just that in the past, we didn't have as many ways to avoid doing the work we need to survive. Today, survival is easier - we can just buy what we need and that means we can also buy not having to do anything at all with our time. A lot of people scrolling social media, when they could be learning something useful.
