Warped Perspectives

in Reflections3 months ago

At the start of the year, I ordered new glasses - my first pair in over seven years. My old pair are older than my daughter and suffice to say, my eyesight has changed since then. Hopefully though, it isn't going to change as fast now I am a little older, as what caused the rapid degradation is Keratoconus, which is where the cornea thins and changes shape. It affects about 1 in 2000 people so - lucky me.

There was a "deal" on which meant I could get the lenses of the normal glasses cut at half price, plus a pair of prescription sunglasses with the total of those at 50% off also. They were still very expensive, but less "very expensive" than the very, very expensive they would have been. I have never had prescription sunglasses, and I think it is a good call to get some.

So, my eyes have changed a lot in the time since my last pair and I was not really ready for how much of a difference they have made. While everything is now in "HD" again, it is also somewhat warped, and distances are different. And for example, when I look at my phone and turn it so the edge is facing me, it has a pronounced warped shape to it, as if the corners aren't square. And, when I got into the car to drive to the gym, it felt as if I was sitting very high, like in an SUV or a van.

Speaking of the gym for a moment...

As I was walking through the underground parking lot, I watched as a car slowly reversed and I thought it was going to hit the parked car behind it, but stopped about two inches short, and then just stopped. As I moved around the car, there was no one driving - they had left the handbrake off and it had rolled out of the slot.

What was super weird, was that there was a couple sitting in their car next to it, and instead of doing anything, they just watched it roll away. Finns are not very proactive in helping, unless they are explicitly told to help. As the car was locked, I couldn't push it as the steering will was slightly turned, and I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't hit it into something else, plus I didn't have anything to chock the wheel with.

So I took a picture.

The gym is in a kind of shopping center with a couple warehouse type stores, so first I went to the gym and asked them to make an announcement of the numberplate over the PA, but no one came forward. Then I went to the couple stores and asked for the same. No response.

Back at the gym.

At the gym, I searched a car registration site, paid 2.95€ for the basic information, and got it sent to my email, as well as on the screen. Among other things, I know the year, insurance company, VIN, registration information, when the next inspection is due, engine size and of course, who the owner is, and their home address.

No phone number though.

So, after a call to information, I was able to get the number eventually and then called the guy. This took about twenty minutes all up though, so by the time I had called, he had already discovered his car sitting in the middle of the carpark and said that he was lucky, as at least it didn't hit the other car.

He didn't say thanks for trying to contact.

And, whilst I was staring at my screen while on the stretching mat instead of working out, I took a fucking selfie so I could show a little of what my new glasses look like. The last pair have thick, anthracite-colored frames, so these ones are far lighter-looking on my face. Though, they don't make my face look any better.

I am actually quite interested at how my brain is going to process the changes and how quickly it is going to adjust. According to the optometrist, it should be fine in a week or so, but of course she has no idea about my challenges with cognition since I had a stroke. Since my brain doesn't do much automatically these days, I hope that at least with something like this, it is still going to form some new connections, or blur interpret properly to stop the warped perspective.

My perspective on the world is already warped enough.

But it is weird, because at the moment, when I walk I feel taller, because everything is a bit stretched upward and squashed inward. High definition tilt shift. The ground seems further away, and I am getting the sense of what most of my friends feel like, as they are generally far taller than myself. It makes walking difficult too, as the distances are not coming naturally, and I missed pressing the button in the elevator. A couple weeks though, and maybe it will be back to normal, or maybe it will stay this way, and my views will be skewed forever.

At least I will have an excuse.

Even if your view is skewed forever your brain theoretically should eventually adapt so you can gauge distances beetter XD

I think delaying the workout while you were frantically trying to get in contact with car guy was reasonable but then taking a selfie instead of working was kind of lame XD Did you manage to get some workout done in whatever time you had left? Otherwise there's always next time with hopefully less excitement :D

but then taking a selfie instead of working was kind of lame

All selfies are lame!!

Did you manage to get some workout done in whatever time you had left?

I did and it wasn't too bad. Losing twenty minutes isn't the end of the world for my workouts :D

Sometimes the selfie is the only way you can "prove" (to some value of "prove" given that photoshopping and now AI are things) that you were somewhere doing something (pics or it didn't happen).

Do you remember when it was the "done" thing here to post a photo of yourself in your intro post (apparently some going so far as to do or recommend holding up a newspaper or something with that day's date) to "prove" that you weren't a bot account?

I didn't want to post a photo so I drew a bad one

20min is pretty bad if you're there for half an hour, though if you got 40min in (if there for an hour) that's still pretty good. And if you're there for longer than an hour then that's even less bad XD

Do you remember when it was the "done" thing here to post a photo of yourself in your intro post (apparently some going so far as to do or recommend holding up a newspaper or something with that day's date) to "prove" that you weren't a bot account?

Yes! I can't find one f the ones I did to highlight some of the scam, with Brad Pitt and a drawn on sign :D

Pffft seriously? I love it when people think their editing skills are actually that good XD

I remember once upon a time when I was on some fandom forum a million years ago someone submitted their "drawing" of their fan character which was a screenshot of one of the original characters very badly scribbled over in MS Paint to give them a different hair colour. And apparently thought no one would notice?

Oh, not to blow my own trumpet, but I am one of the lucky guys who were born with 40/20 view, or whatever is called when I can see x2 better than the average. So, by the time I lose 50% of it, I will be as any average Joe. Then I will need glasses.

Getting close to 50, still good for now.

That is amazing - I heard that originally, the Australian aboriginals had something lie 6x better vision (or something like that) than Europeans. They would complain about their eyesight, and no one believed they had a problem because it was 20/20.

Yeah, I am a mutant, got also something called crepuscular vision, I can almost see in the dark, not when it is pitch black, but only when is a bit of light around, close to the cats, but not quite. Some strange genes from the maternal side, going only to males, grandpa got that also.

Actually 2x is quite often seen, like 1 in 20k if I remember right, the best is x10, called also eagle vision, only one in a few million, some Finnish sniper had that, for what I know. Just imagine!

Are you sure they didn't accidentally give you bifocals? 😃 My wife and I just found out today that our eye doctor is retiring. We are going to need to find a new one now. I've been pretty lucky to be the only person in my family who doesn't need glasses (yet).

Are you sure they didn't accidentally give you bifocals?

That is coming next supposedly.

Collect recommendations for a new doctor from people you trust to give recommendations. Some people just think that whatever they have is the best, even though they haven't tried elsewhere.

Will do! Thanks!

He didn't say thanks for trying to contact.

Amazing!

He was more concerned about his car than anything else. What a jerk!

I get being concerned about the car, but not saying thanks for trying at least? People are strange.

That was a very nice thing you did, and it's a shame it wasn't recognized. I probably would have looked for a parking attendant or some employee of the shopping center and have them go through what you did instead.

There are no attendants at these types of carparks here - I actually don't know when the last time I have seen a parking attendant , or if I have seen one in Finland at all... strange. Everything is automated, but this parking lot is free.

Oh that makes sense. We still have them in the Philippines. I guess an employee would have been the next best thing. They could have announced it.

I am actually quite interested at how my brain is going to process the changes and how quickly it is going to adjust.

I understand the same. I think as we get older accepting those changes matters a lot. Some of those changes just kind of kills you. So in order to accept things, mind has to be clear and let go attitude has to increase with age.

Yeah, I have no idea if it is going to adjust enough. At the moment, the warping just makes me feel a bit sick.

As we age our visual problems increase, but with optometric adjustments it is normal for our brains to adjust smoothly to the changes, so don't worry. There are exercises for the eyes as well as for the body, it is a matter of talking to your treating physician (I do not trust optometrists, I prefer an OFTALMOLOGICAL specialist).

The optometrist just did the eye test for the glasses at the glasses shop. Optician did the selling of frames and fitting. An ophthalmologist the diagnosis, writing the prescription etc.

Your face looks better, regardless. I have been using glasses for some time now so I understand how difficult it can be to adjust, but trust me, yours is going to be quick.

I think I should say that you are very good when it comes to usage of things and that is why you have been able to use your glasses for over seven years and about the couple watched the other car, I think some people just have nonchalant attitude when it comes to raising alarms because they feel it is not their business and it is very bad
