We Talk Friday

(WTF)

This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 49: The reality is

Summertime Sadness

The clocks changed in Finland last Sunday and I still think it is a waste of time. Why is it that people think that having a little more light in the afternoon somehow magically changes reality? Why are we so easily fooled and why are we so bad at dealing with reality? Changing the clocks doesn't change the environment in the same way that buying slimming clothes doesn't make us slimmer.

Nightmare Fuel

Okay, so the fuel prices are up a lot, but have you been thinking what I have been thinking? This conflict has been going on a few weeks now, but it seems that all of the governments are about as prepared as the average American - miss two pay checks and become homeless. While twenty percent of the oil goes through that strait, a lot of the fertiliser goes through there also, and now there isn't going to be enough for the growing season in the northern hemisphere. So they started a war knowing the potential disruption, without thinking about food supply??

Who are these clowns.

Destroying Bridges

The US bombed and destroyed a civilian bridge, so we can add that to the war crime list apparently. And the Iranians shot down an American F-15, which isn't a war crime. I don't know about you, but I think this war is going to drag out and we are all going to be price-gouged for years to come for it, and then pay for all the weapons bought and spent on top. Years and years of conflicts ahead, because they are massive money-spinners.

Honestly, I can proudly say it does feel a bit silly when you think about it. We just move the clock forward and suddenly pretend we have “more daylight,” like we tricked the sun into working overtime. Meanwhile, our we are sometimes confused, and mornings become even more dramatic. But it not real happening in my own country base on our time zone here +1 GMT. It’s like wearing tight clothes and expecting to lose weight Lolz, nice idea, but reality isn’t fooled. Maybe we humans just like quick fixes, even when they don’t really fix anything. At the end of the day, the sun is doing its thing, and we’re just adjusting our watches and acting proud about it. don't think more about it just funny anyways.

Wouldn't it be easier just to get up a bit earlier? :D

The clock change thing is silly. Think I heard somewhere that it costs thousands in errant transportation and delivery issues each year. Maybe it was millions.

As far the cost of gas and fertilizer. You are assuming the administration we have here are adults who can critically think through scenarios. They haven't even communicated a clear reason for the war, nor have they communicated a clear strategy or goals. But we aren't talking about the Epstein files as much.

I do hope we are able to find the other pilot. Hegseth is over his head in the pentagon. He is firing senior military staff again. This timein the middle of a war with Iran. He couldn't run a non-profit veterna's group. what made anyone think he could run the Pentagon and DoD. He will face the music eventually.

Not only transportation and delivery issues. Apparently, there’s a notable rise in heart attacks when daylight saving time begins. I scarcely noticed the change when I lived in the city, but here in the countryside, with no streetlights, sunrise and sunset shape your day far more, so the shift feels surprisingly disconcerting.

WOW! I just looked that up. There is a 24% surge in heart attacks. That is crazy!

Crazier still that it's well documented and yet been allowed to continue.

The movement to stop the clock change is getting some momentum it seems. I hear more and more talk of it each year. Maybe some day.

Did it say why?

The disruption to circadian rhythms and sleep deprivation from losing an hour are believed to trigger these cardiovascular events, particularly in vulnerable individuals..

Got this from doing some Google Fu

I wonder if this can be used to target big mac eaters?

I imagine if they eat a lot of them, they will already be a vulnerable indivdual.

Why the heart attacks?

I recall reading about it 25 years ago when newspapers were still a thing. it was supposed to be abolished in 2020 but then Covid happened and it seems to have been forgotten about.

This is from PubMed:
The results of this review with meta-analysis based on studies with mostly adequate and in some cases good quality show an increase in the risk of AMI after DST onset in spring with some moderate to marked heterogeneity between the individual studies. After excluding one study due to inconsistent results (22), no heterogeneity between studies and overall no evidence of a change in risk was found for the autumn transition.
Following the spring transition, people may experience a sleep deficit with abrupt changes in biological rhythms, but not after the autumn transition which provides more time to sleep

I wonder if it might also be tied to spring allergies though.... mine suck and I wish I had a heart attack... :D

Could be, though the 24% increase that coinjoe mentioned, occurs specifically on the Monday after clocks move forward.

Perhaps if people refused to change the clocks for a while, the message would get through.

Yeah,I don't assume they are competent, but it is just so messy it is as of they should be in an asylum.

Everyone is getting fired of late, aren't they? Abd yeah, I hope the pilot is found safe.

A little anti-clock protest :-)

They should be in a daycare or senior home.

I think Bondi is just the beginning. His numbers are in the basement. He can't take the blame himself. His ego won't let him. He will have to spread the blame.

Didn't Noem get fired also a few weeks back?

Yeah, forgot abot that weirdo and her cross dressing husband. Lol

Ha! I only saw the cross-dressing thing the other day. I wonder why she was let go....

The popular opinion is that the immigration tactics and the fact she threw him under the bus during the congressional testimony. Who knows what the real reason is though.

I don't know about Finland but if the clocks don't go back on Sunday I'll be sad. I prefer the early early morning light and I'm happy it gets dark at 5 pm in winter as I'm already inside by the fire.

In Finland the light changes by up to 45 minutes a week anyway. So the clock change is about 10 days worth of difference.

Aren't F-15's like legacy equipment now? I remember those were cool when I was a kid. Leader 1 from the GoBots was an F-15 Eagle. Everyone was all into the F-14 Tomcat because of Top Gun, and the F-16 Falcon because of Iron Eagle, but the F-15 was always legit.

Aren't F-15's like legacy equipment now?

I was wondering this too! I had to look it up to see if they were actually still in service.

The war is going so well that Pete Hegtheth asked our Army chief of staff to resign and Trump asked for 1.5 trillion dollars for our military budget so I am sure the war will be won in two weeks like Trump claimed in his address to the nation a few days ago... I am kidding of course.

This adventure in Iran was probably as poorly planned as most of the actions by the current administration where unprofessionalism is the primary mode of operation.

Any day now the wars will be over and no new ones started. The 1.5T will be given back to the people.

The war is the most rentabilited business in the world, unfortunately.
We can pay all prices of the product, by the way hive is growing a little

Hive needs to go up about 15x :D

Starting to look like an engineered destruction to the world as we know it. Incompetence or right on schedule…

As we all get stupider, it was bound to happen eventually.

Stupider and power hungry.

The second part is where it gets uncomfortable. The lack of preparedness you mentioned is hard to ignore Systems always look stable until they’re stressed, and then you realize how thin the margins actually are. Food, fuel, logistics they’re all so interconnected that one disruption can ripple much further than expected.

Yet, the people who create the problems, don't pay the price or feel the pressure.

Here in Cuba clocks changed a few weeks ago, and it's tedious to week up with darkness. With the blockouts situation in the morning is worse because the light is needed to prepare to work. So, I agree clock changes is worthless

What causes the blackouts there?

It's multifactorial

Agree, the idea of having more daylight doesn't really fox the main problems we have, particularly with increasing fuel costs and worries about food supplies.

This war could be a pretty expensive affair.

summer days feeling lighter now
