No individual is superior to another.
Regardless of their social status, level of education, annual income, or even age.
This premise is so true, but if we think about it a little more, we all depend on each other. No one is in this world who does not need anyone else. You can be a hermit and live alone, but you cannot exist without others. Even if it is simply the fact that you are only alive because someone carried you in their womb during pregnancy.
But if we all have the same value, aren't we completely insignificant to everything else? In a way, we are! And there is nothing “wrong” with being insignificant. We all feel overwhelmed by the scale and our smallness.
But does our size and apparent insignificance mean we are disposable?
Not at all.
Let's do a little exercise. Imagine we are standing by a lake. A small lake. We are fishing. We are using a rod, a simple rod with bait on the end of the hook, attached to a line... In that same lake there are dozens of fish, some larger, others much smaller... But they are all fish! (just as we are in a village... we are part of a community). If one of these fish is attracted by the hook, and the fisherman pulls it out of the lake, that fish will be entirely at the mercy of what the fisherman decides.
In a way, the fisherman's action and decision will forever influence the life of that little creature, which is just a fish in a lake. If the fisherman throws it back into the lake, that fish will continue to live. A small action by someone that is insignificant, but very important, because that gesture meant everything to the rest of the fish's life.
Being small, and no more significant than others, does not take away the significance we may have in this world.
Just a few days ago, in a comment that livinguktaiwan made on one of my posts, they highlighted exactly that point. We can make a huge difference to someone else's life.
And so, in a way, we have in our hands the path to be traced by our actions and choices.
We then form a link. Our actions have an impact not only on others, but much more than just that episode. We end up having the opportunity to build and contribute to a better, more empathetic world.
We are building something. And this “army” of people and actions is growing. Many talk about “karma.” But I think karma is exactly this. If we are honest with ourselves and try to do something good for others, that action and determination to change will have a return. We may not see that effect right away... But it will happen.
Let us have the courage to accept this challenge. Let us put more effort into changing the world. A small action by one person may seem insignificant, but it is not... it is important. Our existence is insignificant, but that should not determine our actions and choices.
