The Mirror

Have you ever noticed that if mirrors didn’t exist, we wouldn’t be able to see our own faces? It’s impossible to align the observer and the observed in the same space. Only with something that reflects an image back to us—albeit not perfectly, since the sides are reversed—can we turn our gaze inward.

So, we can say that other people, reality, and in a way, the whole world ends up being a mirror. And why do I say this?

Well, just as the mirror we have in the bathroom allows us to look at our face, so other people allow us to look at ourselves in a deeper sense.

Let’s imagine we’re meeting up with an old friend and having a pleasant conversation in the late afternoon. We can tell from the other person’s presence, and from our conversation and time spent together, that something puts us in a good mood; and in this way, our self-awareness—our analysis of the emotions that this person and this situation trigger in us—leads us to discover more about ourselves.

We come to realize that talking with other people is something that makes us happy, and so we know that we are sociable people.

When we say “a person,” we mean a group of people, a team’s cheering section, a high school class, a group of friends gathering around a cold beer after a long shift at work, at the end of a long summer evening.

We learn from experience that certain situations evoke specific emotions or sensations in us. We are confronted—simply by being mindful of our state of mind—with the response we have in light of the circumstances that present themselves to us.

In a world where there is an ever-increasing need to be in the presence of real, living people—a human presence that is real, three-dimensional, and not holographic, projected, created, or simulated.

We must seek within ourselves, and in others, to be ever more present. Taking the opportunity to enjoy the presence of the other, and our own presence before the other, or before our own ideas, is more than a necessity in a world that yearns for true, heartfelt human companionship.

Let us increasingly become a vehicle, a medium, a possibility for the other to see in us something of themselves, and let us know how to see in the other something we would not be able to do if we were merely exposed to images projected onto some screen.

Without mirrors, we would rely more heavily on external feedback from others to construct self-identity, potentially altering interpersonal dynamics.

Yes. It is so important to know what "we are" and "how we look". Only in that way we can understand more easily how the the world sees us
